Stuck in the city for now

Yup I think that is a Blue Heron, I call them pterodactyls cause when they are flying they look prehistoric with their long legs dangling.

Nice pics, IMO a bike is the best way to find an oasis in a city. Those river recapture trails are the greatest thing and offer a natural escape from an otherwise hectic urban life.

I went back and took a look at the sign and it says it's a tule elk. Apparently there used to be half a million tule elk through out California at one time.

I can see it now in California 20 years from now.

Walking in a museum in Sacramento in 2030, there will be a picture of a Sharps rifle, and under that picture there will be a heading of "evil rifle", and it will let people know know that at one time these "evil" rifles populated the state of California until common sense prevailed and the state outlawed them.

Sad thing is people will beleive it.

Dang, I swear I thought I was the only one who thought that. I didn't want to mention it because I didn't want anyone to think I was off my rocker, because if you think about it, how do we know how those prehistoric birds fly other than what we see in the movies?:D (those legs "flopping" on take off and touch down, but in the air, pretty graceful).

That pic I posted doesn't really show the "prehistoric" look to well.

But I've seen them out in the swamps on a small pond with high trees all around. They're so odd when they take off, it takes them awhile just to get off the water, then when they get to the other side if they don't have enough altitude to clear the trees they have to pull a hard 180 and head back the other way.
They seem to really struggle to get to cruising altitude, once up though they can cover some distance.
