I put a 8000 pound US made winch on my Jeep bumper. The first thing I found out was I needed a second battery which led to an isolator protecting the starting battery. I installed a deep cycle winch battery which takes discharges better than a starting battery. I also figured out I needed a high amperage alternator, so I added one of those. It takes a while to charge the battery back once you run it down.

Don't forget if you double the winch cable you double the pulling power. I can pull 16000 pounds by looping back my cable. The problem I ran into was I ripped the front bumper out of the Jeep frame and I had to weld up my Jeep frame. I added more steel to make it stronger.

A winch takes some planning. And make sure you are safe by putting a blanket over the wire incase it breaks. I have burned out my winch motor once. The local alternator shop was able to rewind the motor.

If you can, chain a log that is 2' longer than the diameter of your back to the outside of one or both rear tires. The logs sticking out a foot on each side will give you tremendous traction although it will rock you a bit.
