I've been really getting familiar with the engine and it has an incredibly complex head casting. They do cool the engine with the motor oil. However, they also offer the engine in an air cooled version. The weird thing is that they must use the same head on the oil cooled engine as the air cooled engine. Most heads are "solid" with smooth sides. This head is like a piece of coral with pockets and passages that interconnect each other. If I poured water on the head, it would flow from one end to the other. Weird!
Got confirmation yesterday that they are going to total the machine. At this time, I don't know what the buy back amount would be. They're going to send the photos out to some salvage yards for bids and then I'd have to match the highest bidder if I want to keep the machine. At this time, I'm not certain if I even want to buy it back. I've put a lot of work into it and I now know that it's mechanically sound, but I also know the engine has water in it from when the fire was put out. Engine definitely needs to be replaced. I crunched some numbers last night and I figure that if I can buy my existing skidsteer back for $3,500 I could then repair the damage using new parts and replace the engine and still be ahead by $1,500. There is another machine that's local to me with 1/2 the hours and it's a 2-speed with the asking price equal to what the payout would be. The getcha is that it doesn't have the controls that I like, but my machine does. If there was some way that I could swap controls, I could end with a newer machine.
