Chipper Stump Chippers

Does anyone here have any experience with stump chippers? I am thinking about purchasing one mostly for home/farm use but will probably end up doing some custom work once people hear I have one. My question is which kind is best. PTO powered, trailer style, self propelled??? I am leaning towards a 3pt pto model. They are the cheapest and seem like they would work the fastest. I have a JD 3010 to run it. The only down side to these I can see is that it won't be very portable. (only be able to take it as far as I want to drive the tractor) Any comments would be appreciated!

Depending on how big and how many stumps you think that you will be doing. I do tree work as a side job. I don't do grinding though. The guys that are doing stump work all tend to have grinders that are tire driven and portable enough to move easily in tight spots such as through a fence gate into a yard. That might not be an issue for you. What you might do if it is easy enough is go rent one for a day and see what you think. Tractor powered would be nice but I think you might have issues with portability.. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the replies so far. I am going in on it with my father and brother who live near by. We Maintain a total of 6 building sites so If my math is right from last time I hired a stump grinder it won't take long to pay it of at $4,500 for the 3pt version new. I've got about 25 stumps right now!

I have rented a stump grinder before. cost around $250 for 8 hours. Was Vermeer that pulled behind my truck. I was able to grind about 50 stumps in 10 hours. Most were pine (easy) some were oak(slow). When you consider the cost I would consider renting. No maintenance between uses.
