( Go for the TNT option ... more fun that way ) There was a point today when I was removing a stump that I would love to have had some dynamite. I had dug as far as the BH would go and the thing was still too sturdy to do much with. I finally just cut off most of the top portion and filled in the hole. My mom came by and said, why don't you dynamite it? And laughed. I'm not even sure I could still get any! John

Don't need TNT, just buy black power from a gun store, put a small container of in in the hole next to the stomp and dump a line of it to a safe place, drop a match on the line and problem solved ... kinda like in the old Roadrunner & Coyote cartoons. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Update on the stump.

The weather turned good today, where it was OK to get soaked. I spent about an hour with a 13 HP pressure washer getting dirt and rocks free from the roots till the trench around the stump was pretty full of dirt, rocks and water. I'd say I reduced the weight to 1/3 of what it was. I did not yet clear the dirt from under the stump. The BX23 will slightly move the stump so that the water quivers. Sorry to say this is progress.

When the water drains I'll use the backhoe to dredge out the spoils and then give it another pass with the washer.

I did not receive any feedback from the local explosives guy. I guess stumps are not worth a return call.

I really like the ideas about using forced air to burn out the stump. If the wash and dig process does not get it, I will find a long, large-diameter metal pipe to connect the leaf blower to, and give that a try.

Thanks again to everyone. More suggestions are welcome.

BS,
I'm impressed.... You're not gonna let that stump win are ya! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif It makes me feel good to see somebody just as stubborn as me. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A couple of things. I found that a "driveway sweeper" style nozzle on a garden hose actually works better than a pressure washer. The volume of water actually digs in and removes the dirt faster. Also, in an earlier post I mentioned the ramp. It really makes for easy access and also helps when you do get the stump loose.

Good luck,
Greg

Stump R.I.P.

After the second excavation and pressure washing, the stump started rotating slightly with backhoe pressure. When a chain was passed over the top and attached to a big root on the opposite side and pulled by the BX23, it tipped up a few inches. That exposed more roots for washing off the dirt. With three more washing and tipping cycles, it came out of the hole when pulled by the BX23.

It was good experience to have a real project. I am beginning to feel comfortable with the BH.

I will have to say that with the dirt composition, rocks, and root density, that the pressure washer (4 GPM, 3,500 PSI, Turbo nozzle) was much better than any 60 PSI garden hose nozzle would have been. Also, the amount of water in the hole was reduced, so that I did not have to empty in too frequently.

The hole measured approximately six cubic yards. The stump’s wood (and trapped rocks) was a small percentage of that.

Thanks for your ideas and the encouragement.

Congratulations Bitseeker, You're a role model for other like minded, hardheaded individuals. I knew that hunk of wood wasn't going to 'stump' you. Thanks buddy, you made my day!
