Stump removal in the good old days

When I think of stump removal, I always think of the scene in the movie "Shane" where Shane and Starrett finally get the huge stump removed from beside the cabin. I often wonder why they cut down the only shade tree within 50 miles of the cabin, but then I don't make movies. I tried to find a video clip, but couldn't. I did find a different Shane who is very adept at stump removal.

Cruzer,people are still cutting trees down before building their house. A few years ago,I saw a man cutting down a huge live oak in his front yard. I couldn't resist asking why he was doing it. His answer,"I'm planting a maple in it's place". My son is looking at buying a place where seller retired,surveyed 2 acres out a spot to build new house and dozed every tree on the lot.

There is a reason,,
besides the utilities coming in,, the trees destroy any chance of having a perfect lawn.
The trees take all the rain water, leaving none for the grass.

Our house was built 40 years ago, the last two years have been the only years we have had any decent grass,,
the reason is we have had record amounts of rain.

I am not going to cut the trees,, but, if the next owner wants nice grass,, I would bet they will cut the trees in the yard.
We have 24 to 36 inch diameter (breast high) trees, about a dozen on the one acre around the house,,

It is fun to look at the 8 to 18 inch diameter trees that were around the house when we bought it,,

150 years later, and they're still digging rocks out of the fields every spring.

oaks tend to drop huge killer branches without warning or even the whole tree comes down without warning!., and those leaves are a pain to remove in the fall..

Trees add greatly to the value of property for sale. I'll bet we could get 20% more for our place from the trees I planted. Plus they bock the wind and the sun and give a great spot to sit.

I have ancient Ponderosa pines here on the property. The range is from 12" to well over 38". I lose three or four every ten years or so to Pine Bark beetle. When they rot and fall - I just leave the stump. It will be gone in five years also. Something - coyote, skunk, badger or raccoon - always digs around these rotting stumps. Encourages their demise.
