Cut as close to the ground as possible, Drill some holes in it, bust it up alittle with an axe if you want, Add diesel fuel, wait a couple days, add some charcoal, light and cover with a metal tub and let the charcoal smolder and burn the stump out. Works great.

Your suggestions please.

Cut stump as low as you can. Add wood burn?

Backhoe, dozer, and fill dirt out of the question...and budget. Mainly out of the budget.

I was very successful on two LARGE stumps. I dig around the base of the stump 8"-1' or as the roots allow, cut as low as possible, scar whatever I can on the stump and proceed to add wood from the burn piles. I use lots of smaller stuff to get a good hot bed of coals before I add bigger material for an over night slow burn.

I have dug out several big stumps with my BH and have several waiting, to make it look good that would be your best route to go.

Or you could rent a "Stump Grinder" and around in Ashland there is plenty of equipment rentals that you can rent something for 8 hours, and you pay extra after the 8 hours.

Do you know Jerry Dingess from Ashland?

Where are the termites when you need them?

I have wondered why there is no large wood bit for a post hole digger. Then one day on the web saw a stump cutter that worked that way. I have two large hardwoods and one very large pines my excavator has worked on to it capability and they are laughing it it. Hurt it's feelings.

My concern with burning out stumps would be to be sure there is nothing live PVC pipe or phone line that might be damaged by the roots burning. Had a friend who told me in Pittsburgh the drilled holes and filled with water and then drove wood plugs into them. Said you could hear them bust when they froze. Not sure how cold and how long that would take but interesting.

A issue with the hardwoods is just cause the tree is cut does not mean the stump will die. Many will sprout back and that is why they are so slow to rot. Salt is used to kill them. As to helping them rot, makes me wonder for does not salt prevent wood from rotting? There are chemicals you can spray the hardwood stump to kill it also.

You might could find someone who is grinding stumps in the neighbor hood and will grind them for about same as rental fee for they use bigger machines. If there are some other stumps around offer for them to place equipment in your drive way with signs for a day or two in exchange for low price for your work. They probably are slow also.

Yep. Nearly my whole life. His home is a two rock throw from where I grew up, and my mother lives. Their family stopped at our Mom & Pop store the entire 17 years they were in business. Great folks!

The burning is doing the trick. Bust'm up a bit after cutting down as low as possible. Dig a foot or so deep around the stump and add small stuff and get it good and hot and add wood as needed.

One is gone, covered. Another BIG BOY is nearly gone, one good burn and it's history.

The hole that had a 2nd "surprise stump" is a work in progress. However, the swingset/playground area is now relocating to another area (two more stumps).

Anyone wanna buy a brushpile? Logs? Firewood?

Glad your getting some progress on the stumps, they are a big job without using some kind of equipment.

I really like your website!_I"m a big fan of Gospel bluegrass!:D

I figured you knew Jerry, his Mother and Father-in law use to have a little country store, and i was good friends with Judy's brother that died in 99 and his sisters husband that died a few years ago.

I know his whole family and they are great people.

Good luck with the stumps.

I had a large white oak in my front yard that had died at the top, there were still a couple of branches near the bottom that were living but most of the tree was dead. I have been picking up bark and limbs for 3 years and watching it with a guarded eye while cutting grass always worrying about a widowmaker falling out of the top.
I hadn't tried cutting it down because of a board fence near it on one side and a power line near it on the other side. The tree would hit the line if it fell in that direction, everytime we had a storm I expected it to come down. This past Thursday the contract crew for our EMC came out and took it down. They used a bucket truck and started at the top. After they had limbed it and taken most of the trunk down they cut it off about 5' above ground, I wanted something sticking up so I could have leverage with the backhoe. As they were making the final cut we notice smoke coming up around the base. The trunk was seasoned and very hard, guess it generated enough heat while they were cutting to set it on fire.
The crew was going to put it out but I got them to leave it burning, I piled all the limbs around the stump and let it burn. Friday morning the center had burned out and I cut some of the trunk up, split it and threw it into the center. By this morning it has burned down below grade.
It started raining last night so I went out this morning and piled some more wood on it and covered it with ashes. Sitting here right now watching is smolder. I don't think I will have to do anything now other than dump a load of soil on top of it.
