Make sure that nothing and nobody is in the root hole when you cut the trunk off. I seem to recall a guy killing his little grandson that way. Little tyke was down playing in the dirt when Grams was cutting up a blow down.

How awful!

Rick,
I'm looking for quick and simple. Pulling, burning and filling is more work than I have time for. I need the fencing back up in order to keep the critters in and the nosey neighbors out.

I may have missed this.
How big are the trees? 6", 12" 24". What kind of trees? Some will rot pretty quick and others may just petrify.

After hurricane Charlie went through here (SW FLA) in 2004. We had a couple of oaks that were on their side and we trimmed them about 10 feet of the ground. Hoping to get them to regrow, I dug out the root hole. Drove a couple of stakes in the ground about 20 and 30 feet from the tree and in line. Used two ratchet straps . One from the first to the second stake and another from the second stake to the tree, and up-righted the trees. They are as tall now as they were before the storm. About 45 feet.

I did something similar in 2010 after a storm with high winds came through and blew over 5 of our arborvitae trees along the property line. I didn't want to lose them and they were then about 16 feet tall. i used the winch on my H1 to pull them up and seta couple screw anchors in the ground for each tree and tied them off. they are still doing well today almost 4 years later.

Either push the with the FEL or drag them back upright with a chain fastened to your drawbar. Since dirt has fallen into the hole, they likely wont stand straight up, but might be ok for what you are doing. They can then rot in place if they will be out of the way of the fence. Since they fell across your fence, likely they are on your neighbors property now, so a chain hooked to them will keep you off their property and do the job as easy as the FEL. Just hook the chain to the top of the tree stump and pull till it is upright or till your tractor wont pull any more.
