The 30-06 "Springfield" rifle had a walnut stock made out of the root. Dense, gnarly, and wouldn't split during the deployment of the "horizontal butt stroke" in close quarters combat.
-a move not recommended with the modern plastic assault rifle.

Stumps are just an incentive to get bigger equipment.

There is always the stumpary, a garden built using stumps. Gardening by the yard had an episode on it, it was very different.
The stumps were placed with roots up and filled in with moss and ferns. It was really "wild" looking.
