the reason i took the box apart was because the steering shaft was broke , both the bottom and top bearings , didn't look good so i thouht it would be wise to replace them , so i did new bearings seals i even replaced the flat head bolts for adjusting ,i m thinking that the worm gear shaft dropped and the top bearing got out of the race , and when i turned my wheel the other way the shaft came up and pinched the bearing ,after that happened , i didn't have any bearings , so i put that nylon part in so i could try and find out why the shaft was moving , i was turning my wheel back and forth , keep in mind i don't have any shims now and the shaft still moves up and down , i was starting to get upset when my wife said it won't turn , so i freaked out and just quit , i don't plan to leave the nylon in i just feel safer with it there ,the right sector shaft is good , but the left one is wore out , i have been working on this tractor fixing leaks and i am feeling that im spending too much money on it .

sooo you are telling me that i have a money pit ? i was hoping it would be a money maker lol

that's what most hobby machiens are.. money pits. :) and a 00 series ford, while they can still do plenty of work.. due to age etc.. they are in the class of hobby machines.. especially if needing work.. like the steering gear remanned..

Something is way wrong with your box. Consult a manual or parts diagram to continue...could the new worm gear be shorter?

Not in my opinion. A couple posts back you thought the shaft "dropped". Don't see how that is possible. The lower thrust bearing stops the shaft from moving down and the upper keeps it from moving up when the top cover is on.

With the bearings in place the shaft cannot move. These boxes are just dead simple. Perhaps some pictures would help us help you...

the end play with the new shaft and no shims under the cover, is .250" i for the life of me can't understand how this is ,yes the box i simple, i agree but finding quality parts is the hard part . it just seems that every part i have had to replace on this tractor , don't fit right , i don't think the aftermarket is putting out correct parts

you don't have a power steering box do you?

if he's running with no shim stack he's ALREADY at minimum thrust setting.

the issue could be:

badly worn bearing surfaces on the worm shaft

incorrect bearings

very worn bearing cups (races ).. top or bottom

races or cups that have moved.. especially the lower one.

or.. if this was a power box to begin with.. there actually is designed in thrust paly
