I have a 2 acre plot that was just "cleared and mulched." Weeds grew back on it so I tried to use a rotary cutter on it. I snapped four shear bolts in one day. The guy who cleared the land buried the small trees under the much. Now I am hitting them with the cutter. Any idea how I can scoop the buried trees out. I have a skid steer equipped with FEL and Pallet forks. I use a NH 40hp tractor. I also have a box blade and a middle buster. Any help would be appreciated. Did anyone make the equivalent of a rock bucket? would that work in this case?

Hi JNB. I am sure you will get suggestions for how to remove your stumps and trees. However, consider a simple and inexpensive solution I have used. Set you Bush Hog up higher. Weeds cut a little longer don't look that bad, and the surface wood will eventually rot out enough to mow.

Depending on how big those stumps are, you could get them out with a root grapple (easiest, up to about 3-4 inch stump diameter capacity) or you could dig them out with a BH. You'd really need to know approximately how many stumps and what the size range was to make an informed decision on what equipment/implements would be necessary. Your NH should handle the task though.

Sometimes I find my that my rotary cutter becomes a rotary chipper which is hard on the RC. I use my FEL with toothbar to pull out what I find and use SFish's method. Wood rots pretty quick in my area which makes rotary chipping a lot easier . I found this while RC'ing.

You guys are too easy on your cutters. I would have run down the length of that thing Jay, just skimming the top so it would promote decay and not take so long to rot!
('course I don't have one of those fancy front end thingy's you are using, so I work with what I have...)

I tend to cut places I can't see a lot higher until I know what is under there also.

I second Jays' advice, use that FEL for uncharted waters and save your shear bolts, it wont be long before your field is in great shape ! :)

A new use for a rotary cutter- a rotary planer :p. I could keep rolling those trunks with my FEL and "square" them up. Just kidding sandman2234 :D. I will admit that shaving off the bark does promote rot. Jay :)

I think the type of wood makes all the difference in being able to plane it correctly. Use of the FEL will help to square it up nicely. I will have to remember that if I ever get one of them Fancy Equipped Laborer's (FEL)to make my tasks easier.

Good idea to keep your FEL down low to catch on stumps as you are cutting. Also keeping the FEL down low helps if you fall into a hole with the front wheels because the loader will catch you:)
