Forgive this stupid question, but Im a new tractor owner and dont know a darn thing. Have my new lil red 2015 with a whopping 5 hrs on it. Can I brake without using the clutch, Ive just been stopping it with the clutch since I have to shift anyway, but if I want to stop can I just use the brake.

Nancy, I think if you just use the brake it will not want to stop as it will want to keep pulling till the tranny is disengaged with the clutch. You use the clutch to disengage the engine from the transmission and rear end first, then you stop with the brakes.. My 2015 is a hydrostatic so I just push foward or reverse and in the middle it stops. I think you will get lots of giggles from your new tractor.. Have fun and remember most ?'s aren't stupid, just ?'s.. JohnJ

if you don't use the clutch when you want to stop, it will stall like a car. if you are just trying to slow down a bit when going down hill for example, just using the brake should be fine.

the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked! :D

If your 2015 is a gear model and the brake pedals are locked together you will need to use the clutch as you apply the brake since it will stall if you don't. If they are unlocked and you are using the brakes individually to aid in steering left or right then you won't need to use the clutch. If you have the HST model like John you just ease off the forward pedal to slow down and stop. I have the 2615HST and only time I use my brake is when I park on a grade so it doesn't roll. Only time I use the clutch is to engage the PTO.

George2615 says it best. A clutch on a hydrostatic transmission would be like having a cluth on an automatic car. On the HST models, the clutch is only used for engaging the PTO.

Sorry Farmerboy, the Mahindra manual states the clutch is also to be used when shifting into a different range. You will find it in the operating instruction section.

Achingback is correct per the book. My owners manual generically covers both gear and HST 2615 and 3015 tractors. The book does state that before selecting a new range to stop the tractor and push in the clutch. Do not change range when tractor is moving.

If the tractor is stopped and in neutral however the range selector can be moved between L/M/H without the clutch.

I spoke with my dealer who said if an HST tractor is running the clutch is mainly used for engaging PTO operation. For most every other lever, MFD, L/M/H, Diff lock, all that is needed is for the tractor to be idle /neutral and not moving.
