Stupid Shear Bolt

I noticed a new mower at the dealers with a plastic access plate in the plastic boot. Seems like a real good idea at least until it falls off and you lose it.

Usually it takes me more time to dig the tools and new bolt out of my tool box than it does changing the bolt. I seem to bust more bolts hitting high spots on the ground than anything else. I broke one bolt on a hidden fence post, and one on the log in the field. All others were on high spots. I am hoping that I will "scalp" them off after a few mowings and not have to worry about as many bolts.

There has a metal shield that bolted on to the gear box on mine. After replacing the first shear bolt, it now sets in the corner of my shed until I use it in a future welding project.

I have a Rhino SE-6 and the first time I sheared a bolt I had the same problem. After I replaced the shear pin I noticed that there was a grease fitting there and I greased the fitting. I've sheared two bolts since then and both were clean. The only thing I can figure is that the ungreased fitting did not allow the shaft to come around fast enough to shear the pin completely off.

Yeah, I noticed that grease fitting to, I figured it was there to prevent wear on the gearbox shaft when you sheared a bolt. I never thought it might help the bolt shear better. I had sheared a few before and never had that happen until the last one.
