I made the mistake of giving a legit email to gasspouts.com several years ago and get bombarded by their emails. I've lost a couple of the seals that go in the spouts... will never buy their overpriced nonsense again ( would buy ATV fuel can spouts and the like )

would food grade silicone baking sheets make good gaskets for fuel? I mean look at this thing... it's already got gasket patterns marked on the material... my wife has a couple of these she's ready to retire but I didn't know how this type of silicone could handle petroleum/oils/gas?

I think this is the same stuff but no idea if it's the exact same chemical composition ... just that ours are rated about the same... Robot or human?

Is the seal just a flat seal where the spout screws onto the gas can? Nitrile rubber or Viton are both resistant to gas .

I am not sure how that silicone sheet would work. Might try soaking a piece in gas for a few days to see how it reacts.

Amazon has a variety of seals for gas spouts if you can figure out what size you need.

Just make sure she doesn't know where you keep your guns if you plan on taking her sil pat
It's been my experience that ALL of those corrugated fuel nozzles are worthless garbage and they are worthless entirely because they are made on the cheap using lots of reground recycled plastic.
Regrinding plastic only seems like a good idea but it is, in fact, a horrible one because the heat cycles on the polymer are doubled sometimes tripled and each heat cycle contributes to a significant degradation of the polymer molecule ( it's called unzipping in the trade).

To the consumer this appears as plastic components that break easily, they crack and split, and don't last very long.

There are additives that mimic the flexibility and feel of virgin plastic but that's it, they mimic it, they don't undo the heat cycle damage. Ya can't undo damage done to a molecule.

If you are old enough to have had tupperware products from the 70s and 80s you know how long virgin plastics can last, that were carefully injection molded to keep the heat as low as possible. I've seen 'em last 30 years. Not any more.

As far as tupperware, my wife has some she got when we first got married 47 years ago and they are only a little discolored. Otherwise, they're fine.

Same here, 40 year old all scratched up Tupperware bowls, mostly used for popcorn the last 10 years. The lids seemed to degrade though.

So far, the nozzle hasn't been the problem -- maybe this was a virgin plastic bunch? Just the seals which go around the base gave out after 2 years. The nozzles are 3 to 4 years old and I use them with both mixed gas and 100% gas.

I got a couple of the red rubber 1-1/2 inch plumbing seals from BigBox and jammed them in there. So far they are holding out and no more leaks. Let's see if they deteriorate quickly with fuel exposure.

glenintenn,

Based upon your TBN member name, I presume you live in TN, so you can get these if one is local.
I replaced all the PITA spouts on all my gas and diesel cans with spouts from Rural King. They have lasted 8-10 years so far. Ez-Spout comes in two sizes. Smaller nozzle diameter for gas and larger dia for diesel. I bought them when they were $6 each but now are $9

As far as using silicone cooking sheets. That silicone will stand up to any solvent, including gasoline, kerosene, diesel, etc that I would expect you have in your garage. My only concern is the cooking sheet is too thin to make a proper gasket that has enough thickness and is correct softness ( durometer ) to fill in the irregularities between spout and can opening so you get a good seal.

In short, Silicone is not a good recommendation for either gasoline or diesel. Nitrile will be your friend. Silicone has an unsatisfactory rating for both, and will turn to mush.

Simple, Buna-N or NEOPRENE. Those are your 2 good options for materials.
