Does anyone have experience or info on the reliability of the Subaru engines in the Coleman generators? Or is there some other site that might help? Thanks.

I recently asked the same question concerning a Lincoln PowerArc welder/generator w/ Robin/Subaru 9 hp engine on another forum. The few responses were that they are pretty good engines. One responder stated he had owned his (Subaru engine) for three years with no problems and had recently run it for 5 days straight after a hurricane. He said it was a very easy starting engine, reliable but seemed to burn more oil than comparable motors.

Wish I could tell you more but that's a quick summation of what I was told.

Visit TBN's Power Trac forum. Several current production models have Robin/Subaru engines. They get discussed quite a bit there. ;)

We've sold the Robin/Subaru on a couple different pieces of equipment.
Billy Goat Blowers have a 9 hp on them. The Briggs 8 & 10hp were having crank problems and the engines had to be run less than 3600 rpm and lacked power. Subaru has performed great. I sold 4 or 5 Easy Lawn Hydro seeders(back when building houses was fashionable and a good business) with 22 hp Subarus and again no problem. Last MI-T-M pressure washers. Have had no problems. Better than a Briggs, maybe not deserving of a Honda quality reputation yet. Less $ when you make the purchase. Parts also have not been an issue.

One more thought! If your looking at a Coleman Generator run it. One Loud generator. Especially if your using it in a campground, on a boat or to run a blender full of Margaritas at a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Honda there has it hands down, no questions. Look for db ratings if you can

What's the price an power of that Coleman generator?

Home Depot has a Makita G6100 generator with the Robin engine for sale for $749. I looked at their website, but don't see it there. It's in the store and I look at it at least once a week trying to decide to buy it or not. I want it,but don't really have to have it right now, so I just look at it. LOL

Amazon has the same thing on their site, but the price is more then twice what Home Depot has it for. I'm unsure why this is, it's such a huge difference that it also has me wondering if there's a catch somewhere. Too good to be true type of thing.

Amazon.com: Makita G6100R 5,800-Watt 11 HP Portable Power Generator: Home Improvement

I like to go to Amazon and compare prices and read reviews.

I have a Coleman Powermate generator, has a Yamaha engine.
They seemed to have multiple engines in many models. Mine is built very well, only used it handful of times, has an hour meter, power usage meter.

But I would avoid buying one right now as the company went under last year, so you have have no warranty. This article says a little more. Powermate files bankruptcy - Forbes.com

I had to buy parts for a 9hp Robin engine and they were through the roof!! A carburator- $165. (an 8hp Honda carb. $65.)
I'll never buy one.

I've got a 8.5hp Robin engine on my Gravely 2 wheel tractor. It is 10 years old doesn't use any oil and runs great.

I have a Pramac generator with a 9hp Robin/Subaru engine. Its about 3 1/2 years old and only has about 100 hours on it but it has always performed flawlessly. I pull it out and crank it every few months to exercise it and it always starts on the first pull. It came shipped with a bottle of Mobil 1 and that is what I've continued to use in it. No complaints from me.

In Holland, these engines are known as "Robin" engines. I was surprised that they were built by a division of Subaru heavy industries...

From my experience from a railway construction machinery repair shop, they dont break down more often than a Honda. For about a half a year, i worked there servicing a mixed fleet of about 50 units, with Honda as well as Robin/Subaru.
