The Suspended MMM's follow the terrain better than the RFMs. They are hung from the tractor and generally ride above the ground. They do have guage wheels if the terrain changes to fast to prevent scalping.

I know that Kubota and Deere have suspended MMMs and am pretty sure New Holland & Case do as well. Don't know if the Massey does.

I've used both MMM and RFM and the MMM seem to follow the terrain better than RFM for abrupt changes. However a Front Mount Mower is simply something you have to see to believe, I can't figure out how to scalp the lawn with it. I currently use MMM and FMM, the FMM is amazingly superior. The MMM is pretty good. As Hazmat wrote, most of the MMM have gauge wheels, which help a lot.

Bob,

So is the FMM's superiority in the way it's mounted, the closeness to the wheels, or is it in the tractor type it's attached to? How is it different than, say, using a rear mount and driving in reverse in terms of the cut and the lack of scalping?

Cliff, I don't know! I just know the darn thing works great. Sort of an interesting thing, it has a 2 point mount, and the mounting arms seems to have some ability to move independantly of each other (quite unlike a 3pt hitch that seems to be relatively rigid in its geometry). Also, the front mount makes it very easy to get under things and mow along side things. It is one of those things that has to be tried to be understood. But if I can put it into some sort of wording, my brother, who is not allowed by any member of the family to attempt any repair that requires a more sophisticated tool than duct tape, came over one day. I let him drive the Ventrac for a few minutes. After about 45 minutes of mowing he came inside, all excited and said "that is just like driving a video game." Then he jump up in excitement, landed wrong and twisted his ankle. His wife promptly chastised him for jumping in my house and off to the kitchen they went for an ice pack.
