Subsoiler questions

I am planning on building a subsoiler for an after work project.
I need to trouble someone with a couple of questions.
How long is the main beam on most units and at what angle
is the cutting edge on?

Thanks,
Zach

Re: Subsoiler questions

I don't know the angle, but I asked a similar question a while back and basically the length of the subsoiler is dictated by your 3pt lift height. You want it to be able to go as deep as possible, but yet still be able to raise it above ground for transport.

Re: Subsoiler questions

Yeah I think I remember reading your post.
I needed to burn some time here at work and thought
I could get a sketch together before I go home today.
If I have to wait until I get home to look at the tractor I will.

Thanks,
Zach

Re: Subsoiler questions

Have a look at the pics on the thread about a Cable Plough. If you make the subsoiler shank similar to the one that Bobodu has, but instead of making it a fixed depth to the tpl bottom links, have it in a frame, bolted in two places through the frame, the lower one of which would be best as a shear bolt so that it will not bring you to a sudden stop. If you read that thread you will see I am inclined to make a ripper (as deep as I can possibly go) for planting olive trees next Oct/Nov. You will also see from, I think another thread, the recommendation to keep your top link parallel to the ground, irrespective of the depth at which you are working. Good advice IMO. Old McDonald.

Re: Subsoiler questions

The best sub soiler I have ever seen is a beam off a land plow. Take the point and mold board off and shape the end of the beam to accept a hardened tooth from a backhoe. weld up the 3pth and their you are. I know cause I got one like that. Its real good for pulling rocks also.

Re: Subsoiler questions

I just looked up the subsoiler in my TSC catalog. It said "maximun ripping depth 12 inches." Much will have to do with the HP available and how much of that will get to the ground (traction).Of course, soil condition will come into play.Make it adjustable...like the shear bolt idea too!!

Re: Subsoiler questions

Thanks for the input guys.
I like the shear bolt idea. I know what it is like to come
to a sudden halt moving at a pretty good pace. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
