Not true.

Depends what state you live in.
I can own mace/cs tear gas in pa.(not sure about cn)

However from what I have read pepper spray is more effective than tear gas.
TG is an irritant and pepper spray an inflammatory which will cause swelling. From a hand held canister good quality pepper spray is the way to go IMO.

In Maine I have never come across mace for sale.
I say we get together to test this stuff out once and for all so we can give a real report. I get to spray you first though. :D
If you're still able to see and can find my *** after I've hightailed into the woods...:p

I'm sorry, but .22 bullets can and do kill people. Two weeks ago a man was sitting in his living room watching TV. A few 'gang-bangers' decided to shoot at his house. The bullets struck the man and he died. Now they are in jail waiting trial on capital murder charges.
By the way, the US Military fires a 5.62mm round in the M-16 and the M-4 rifles. These are very close in size to the .222/.223 caliber you find in varmint rifles.
I have several pellet guns; at close range they work pretty good. Another choice would be .22 caliber birdshot. Birds really hate it! :D My Grandad used to protect his watermelon patch by loading his shotgun with rock salt. My Dad said the salt really encouraged him not to raid the watermelon patch. :)

This really is a ridiculous notion. Shooting accurately is nearly impossible in a high stress situation. It takes a great deal of range/ kill house time to be proficient. Suppose she uses rubber bullets. What will she do after she pisses off the intruder with her non-lethal weapon? What you want is a panic room. You are planning to be a victim.

A .22 and a 223 are completely different, and yes .22s are deadly. Can someone tell us what the muzzle velocity of a .22LR is, and how much does it weigh? The muzzle velocity of a .223 is about 3000ft/sec. Are they 56 grains? Someone please tell us the kinetic energy of the two rounds.

I know a plump guy who was shot with ,22 bird shot, in the belly at point blank range, The picture of his wound is on the wall of shame, and we laugh at/with him all the time. The wound looks like a 3" dia. bruise due to soft tissue trauma, with a spot in the middle. After being shot, he ripped the revolver out of his boyfriend's hand. Love can be ugly:laughing::laughing:

Ok a 22 long rifle is the same diameter as a 222 223 22-250 22 swift. The bullets are shorter and are crimped by the base. 22LR bullets range in weight from 30 grains to 40 grains can be hollow point FMJ or lead. Energy is from 104 foot pounds to 204. They can and do kill. Not worth a **** for stopping but as a special ops friend told me any size hole gives you an advantage over no hole at all. That being said the best for your mother would be a 20 gauge shotgun single shot or better a double barrel. She could practice with very light trap loads but load it with high brass when its in the protection mode. She will not be afraid from the recoil of the trap loads and if it is ever needed for defense she will not even notice the difference.

Well all .22 round are not equal, but the .22LR usually weighs from 36 to 40 grains, and goes from about 1135 to 1360 on the high end, depending what barrel they are shot from. Muzzle energy is about 116 to 150 or so ft. Lbs.

The .223 Remington varies a lot also. from 40 to 75 grains. Velocities from about 2800 to maybe 3200 or so.. energy from 1250 to 1350 or so Ft. Lbs. so on average about 10 times more powerful than a .22 Long Rifle round. give or take.

Some consider the .223. not adequate for deer sized animals, others do. Not very many people consider the .22 LR adequate for deer sized animals. Of course a pellet gun pellet to the head can kill easily. No one is saying that a .22 LR is not lethal on humans, because it has killed very many. But you dont want to bet your life on stopping a fight with a .22 LR. Lots of people who were shot and killed by .22 LR rounds, died some time later, maybe after they kept on coming and killed the homeowner with a edged or blunt weapon. You just cannot depend on it to stop the fight. Hardly any pistol can be 100% depended on to stop an assailant, but some are MUCH more dependable in that department than the .22LR

So most of you are suggesting I just let my mom use my Ruger 9?

Good thorough answer. But there is more...

Not only is the .223 ten times as powerful, but it is also an unstable round. As soon as it hits anything solid, it tumbles and/or ricochets creating a huge amount of destruction. One concern is that the first thing the bullet touches might be four/fourteen houses away.
The best weapon suggested so far is the shotgun with target loads and high brass defensive loads.

So most of you are suggesting I just let my mom use my Ruger 9?

Not unless she can demonstrate she can safely operate it, and hit reasonably well with it. and is willing to practice with it to stay that way. Beppington, part of "being armed" is the mindset that goes with it. The willingness to take on an awesome responsibility, and demonstrate the ability to be effective and safe to herself and others. Some pooh-poohed the pepper spray, but I dont, sometimes that is the best answer for some people. I have instructed hundreds of women on how to shoot handguns, they are the correct choice for many, but not all. A Pump Shotgun can be a better choice for some, and some should never have a firearm. I am a big firearm supporter, but I also realize that some people do not have the physical or mental abilitys to operate one. Only you and your Mother can decide what is best here.

I have always felt a woman or man for that matter that is confused about the mechanical workings of a semi auto pistol is better off with a revolver. The revolver is a much simpler weapon and not so confusing under stressful situations. I watch my wife and daughter shoot and they both handle revolvers well. Put a pistol in their hands and all bets are off. I know that there are exceptions to the rule but it is what I have seen. Before using any gun for self defense you need to truly understand how it functions and operating it must be second nature. My mother wanted a home defense weapon and after a few tries at shooting a 38 and almost dropping it. We both concluded she needs a home security system cause when she picks up a gun she is putting herself in harms way.
