i have a old monky wrench.. the non slipping GOOD parallel jaw type.., a set of gas pliers, the ones witht he wire cutters at the middle of the jaw, 2 screwdrivers. a spud wrench, ball ofmechanics wire, and some extra pins, a couple large value fuses, and a shop wrag. small roll of black tape and a couple zip ties., plus shear pins/ bolts to anything I'm towing.

that's my minimum in each box. some boxes have more. I keep other specialty items like road flair and triangle behind the seat or in the op platform.. fire extinguisher on a rops or fender or canopy bracket. I also usually have a bunji cord or two on my rops or canopy if needed.

Because of all the variety in my attachments, I keep a toolbox on the implement that has specific parts and tools needed to work on that machine. I use ammo cans for a weather tight container. Bolts, knives, teeth, pins, cotter pins, clips, oil, grease, and the proper wrenches for each task would be too much for a tractor box. I buy good spare wrenches (including sockets and handles) at garage sales and flea markets using a shopping list made up from each attachment. No more walking back home for that single part or tool that would not fit in the tractor box. What is important to me on the tractor are gloves, insect repellant, lynch pins, drawbar pins, flashlight, hammer and a 2" ball for trailer towing.

A can of flying insect fogger at arms reach. Two run in's with yellow jackets taught me this. It definately takes some of the onery out of a swarm while you make your getaway.

For my tractors with 3-point hitches, I made brackets that hold a hammer on the back of a fender. That comes in real handy for driving in pins when making hitches, and for driving broken shear-bolts out of a bush-hog. The toolboxes hold a crescent wrench, screwdriver, extra lynch pins and hitch pins. On my bush-hog tractor, I also carry mosquito spray, ear-plugs, gloves, a small log chain, and a bunch of spare shear bolts for the bush-hog. All that fits nicely in the little, factory-installed, fender-top box, on my JD 4120. For shear bolts, I use 5" lg, 1/2", gd 5 carriage bolts & nuts, which are thrown away by the bushel where I work (we use big electric motors that are attached to shipping pallets with them). They break a little easier than regular grade 5 bolts, but are free so I dont mind changing a little more often. The easier break provides an added degree of protection for my gear-box. They also break real clean, and I can change one fast. I grab a carriage bolt, attached nut, and drift pin out of the box on my way down, pull the hammer, drive out the broken bolt, drive in the new one, attach the nut, peen over a few threads with the hammer, and am back mowing in under a minute every time. Those folks with slip clutches have very little on me, and those can be a real pain to keep in shape from what I hear on this site. My tractors are all quality machines that are well maintained over the winter. For the most part, all that crescent wrench and screwdriver does is gathers rust. Hardly a day goes by that I dont use the hammer however, but I aint got time to dig thru the toolbox to get it and it takes up too much space, hence the fender brackets.

Baling wire without duct tape is like half a repair.

Baling wire, oh, come on now. Strip the plastic jacket off a length of 14-2 or 12-2 electrical wire, you end up with one of the most useful and cheapest all-purpose ties and fasteners you will ever use. Strong, lightweight, takes little storage space, easy to cut, easy to handle, never rusts, it's even COLOR CODED (black, white, bare copper) for those concerned about such matters. Best and cheapest all purpose bundling/tying material ever invented.

Work gloves.
Extra pins.
I'm never that far away from my shop if I need something else. If I leave tools on the tractor they won't stay there, my little boy sees to that.

Baling wire! I haven't seen a wire tied bale in ages.:)

Elictrical wire can't be cheaper than than a chunck of used wire taken off of a hay bale, Steel to copper, used to new:confused:
