I was concluding the same thing looks as if 48" would be more the right size.

I have a King Kutter 48" XB blade on my 2230 and it works well, I would not want anything bigger.

I don't know. I just bought a 60" for my BX2230 and we are 60% clay, 18% silt for 78% hard pack and I'm pullin' it. Scarifiers down, diff lock engaged and 4WD and just lay it into 'er. Might just be scrappin' the surface, though! (no pun intended!) I got it from these guys:

She will hang up on roots and stuff, causing you to back up 3-4" and get a little run at it, but I think it would do that with a 48", anyway.

Regards

I have a gearmore 48" blade and all I can do in my hard pan with a full box is spin tires but I am really not much of an operator.

That sounds about right. I learned to start accelerating when about 3/4 full or so to get the momentum to pull the full box any distance. (4x4, diff lock, of course)

Ditto the "King-Cutter XB" 48".... bought it at Tractor Supply on sale for around $345 for my BX...works great and seems to be well made. It's designed specifically for "sub-cut" tractors.....anything larger and you will start breaking things on your BX...just my opinion.

As was mentioned, 48" is the size you need.
Ive got a 48" Landpride BB. It was pricy but is good quality. For a SCUT, Im sure a when old BB would work just as well.

Traction has been my biggest limitation. I have a 48" and don't think I would go any wider. With the scarifiers down, I can cut a nice little wedge, but it is easy to stop the tractor with too much cut. Stop, raise it a bit, go forward, rinse, repeat. On the surface, a 60" seems like it would help production, but in the end, I don't think it will be as effective.
