Mike... try this one...
FileZilla
Its open source, free, and very good.
I feel for you with your software issue. Working with software companies is 99% of where my sometimes sparkling attitude comes from. They are so interested in keeping you (the consumer) from stealing from them, that they don't mind returning the favor.
Any time there is software that is tied to a specific PC, the consumer is under the thumb of the company if he ever needs to reinstall. Especially if the company goes out of business and there is no one to offer you first born to, to get them to bless your software and re-activate it for you. They have in effect stolen from consumers because software that we paid for cannot be used now.
Luckily I work for a large enough company that when a software company says they are not going to reactivate a software package for us (because "their records show it has already been activated"), I threaten legal action and they take notice. Many times e reinstall all software on a PC and companies play hardball about letting us re-activate software. Even we are out of luck if the company is out of business and there is no one to contact.
That is when we hit the crack sites on the internet and download cracks for our own sotware, but that only works if the software is in high enough demand that there are even cracks available for it.
DRM (Digital Rights Management) has made it even worse. We have run across DRM'd PDF documents (some VERY expensive) that we legally download but they tie themselves to not just a PC, but to a SPECIFIC USER on that PC. The user then leaves the company and we have to threaten legal action to get access to our documents.
My blood pressure is going up. Got to stop now. I deal with this at work, no need to get bent out of shape discussing it on a stress relieving site such as this.
***Edit: Consumer education just isn't at the point that it needs to be at, so that people realize there are alternatives and not standing for product activation and DRM schemes. Maybe one day we'll get there and companies will get the idea. Media (Software, Music, and Movies/television) is the only industry out there where the consumer is AUTOMATICALLY treated like a thief from the very beginning and then stands for it.
