Next time:

Do you have an ordinary electric jig saw? You can get metal cutting blades for a couple of dollars at Lowes or Home Depot and they will cut 1/4 inch thick, no problem, works quite well in fact.

Good post. I amazed at the number of times that not having the "right tools for the job" prevent us from getting it done with what is available. You are correct, I have cut a lot of steel with a jig saw and a metal cutting blade. Not the fastest or most dramatic way to get it done (no shower of sparks) but it works. Very good sugestion. Once we have had the 14" chop saws or Milwaukee sawsalls with bi metal blades we forget what it actually takes to get it done, if only a little more time is involved.
