I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy a countyline carry all at box store.
I noted one reviewer said he only carried 700 pounds (the ad says it will carry 1000 pounds) and bent the frame just below the two lower pins on the 3 pt hitch. So I'm debating on how to strengthen those vertical pieces of steel on both sides. Do I bolt on Oak 2x4s to each? Do I weld on extra steel and if so how thick of steel. Amature welder here with a Lincoln 135 flux core wire welder that plugs into a household outlet. Next, how to strengthen where the vertical meets the horizontal forks. Should I run something from just about the 2 pins down to horizontal forks to form a triangle or should I get a strong piece of angle iron and bolt it to where the vertical meets the horizontal?

In winter I burn coal. Was thinking of making some sort of box (low end at the end of the forks) made out of pallets that I can slide on the forks to carry coal for burning in my coal stove. I burn 40 pound bags and don't need more than 10 at a time.
I use the ash (after the burning process) my plan is to store the ash in metal trash cans to be used as a traction aid on the road I live on. I live on at the end of a 1/2 mile dirt road (with a 200 foot driveway) that's not maintained by the state. I live in Central NY. Gets icy at times and the ash makes for good traction much the same way the state puts sand on the main roads. Other than occasionally carrying tools: shovels, rakes, chainsaw, basic hand tools I can't see using it for much more.
I do pull 3 tires behind the tractor bolted in the shape of a triangle to groom the road but a D right bolted somewhere to it should make for an easy attachment point.
Suggestions please.

Thanks
Tim

Weld triangular gussets outside over and joining the vertical and horizontal bars.

My bet is that the "bending" was due to a heavy load along with going over bumps at a good speed.

I have that carry all, and would not expect any sort of failure with a 1/2 ton load.

Now get things bouncing, and metal tears up all to rapidly.

And to strengthen the vertical piece I believe I'll get some 2x2 stock (typically the steel that slides into a receiver of a hitch to tow with) and put it against the two vertical pieces. Either weld or bolt.

I agree. 700 pounds can be 1500 pounds in the blink of an eye with a good bounce. In winter my mahindra 25hst stays in 4wd and is a steady but slow tractor.

A large triangular gusset will be the best way to strengthen. Weld it.

Going to get one and beef it up. Lots of welding to do and some steel to buy.

Got a digging project to do and finish up by the middle of next week first

Thanks for the replies

You can't really do much to supplement the corner where the vertical meets the horizontal members without giving up cargo capacity. But I will contend that that will be the failure point if the pin locations are reinforced.

I have that same carry all. I also put a bend in it carrying a heavy load on a bumpy woods road. I straightened it with the help of a torch then made a gusset piece like this out of 1/4 stock

Then I welded ot to the carry-all frame and drilled out the gusset bracket so the pin went thru both pieces.

I took the bumps slower after that but I wasn't afraid to load it up. Here's 1000 lbs of blocks

And a 1/3 cord of firewood
