No need to hold the 4x4's down, when they place it down they should be able to set it on them just fine. They even may want to move one or two of them, so if you had them staked in place with rebar, you would be out of luck.

Good advice guys. Do you think it is a waste to put the 6 mil plastic down?

Personally, I wouldn't put it down. You want water to drain, and it may keep it from happening. If the concern is weeds growing through, you could always put down weedblock instead.

I bought a 20' "watertight condition" for $1200 delivered last year. A 40' was $400 more. It has a couple small dents, but no breaks in the skin. They had aluminimum ones available too, but more costly (sorry, but I don't remember that price).

Things to consider:

They get really hot when sealed up and sitting in the sun. I used to store my tractor there before the house was built but had great concerns about the high temp. and the onboard fuel. Same would go for any fuel-powered tools, oils, etc.

Have them place it where you want it. Mine came on a rollback truck and they couldn't get it where I wanted. I tried several techniques to move it, but resorted to hiring a D6 dozer to pull and push it into position (1/8 mile on hilly dirt roads). My B7800's loader won't even lift a corner, and the cross beams on the bottom makes it hard to slide.

As mentioned, the doors on the narrow end make storage planning important.

All in all... I would do it again. I plan on pushing it back into a hillside and covering half of it with dirt and the other half with stone to make it a more permanent addition of my property now that the home is completed.

I paid about $1200 delivered, the 40 footer would have been $600 more but I couldn't get a truck with a 40 footer where I wanted it. As for moisture, it is as dry as a bone and as for sweating, It has been through a full range of Tennessee seasons already and nothing has rusted inside. I keep a Kawasaki Mule and a large assortment of tools inside. The heat issue concerned me also, I set a temp datalogger in the container last summer and was suprised that the temps were not more than 10 degrees above ambient outside. The container has a white roof and is painted red. I have been very satisified with the purchase.

I bought a 9.5x8x40 hi-cube one trip (looked new) last year for ~$3K delivered. You can get doors on both ends style for machinery if needed. Push it back in the trees for shade & mount on used RR ties for airflow under. No other prep. Woodchucks will take up residence under quick but will leave if you have noise & commotion in the container. Ask your local Wal-Mart store manager for suppliers as they are a huge user of incoming freight & also consumer of rental units. Look behind a store & you'll see a dozen containers. Rented, no prop tax increase as temporary storage!

Check to be sure the doors swing smooth & not sprung as it can be a struggle to wrassle with doors & latches. Pinched fingers & toes smoetimes worse are the typical workers comp claims.

Thanks - more good suggestions. I'd like to see the container before delivery, but that may not go over to well with the seller. Baltimore is only an hour or so drive from Harpers Ferry, WV.

4 inches in my opinion is a waste, 2 inches should be suffice(a good thing to use is 3" x 5" Material (Bull Rock) or small rip rap). Paint the top white. Most shipping containers have small vents on the top corners. My company have bought about 6 container as we are using 3 and the rest are at the fish camp my boss has. None of the stuff in all of the containers have rusted or nothing bad has happened. If you get alot of rain then put either 4x4's or RR ties under the containers. This may pose a problem if you intend to load tractors into the containers like i do(both L35's fit into a taller 40') but you can always build a small ramp.
