All spring my sump runs constantly, :30 on, 1:00 off. It really does a tremendous amount of work. I really hate seeing that water run away when I could use it to re-fill my pool. Any ideas how I might get that water to the pool? As it is right now, the pump lifts the water approx. 9' up, out, and away from the house. I don't know if using the ground water would be anything more than attaching a hose to the end of the sump line or whether the added 48" lift up & over the pool side would be too much to ask of the pump. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

Good Evenin Coach,
Other than an additional 4 ft of lift to get the water up over the top of the pool, there should be no problem ! The additional lift will lower the flow rate to some degree but you will reap the benifits by getting the pool filled.

Earlier this year when I installed a sump pump and drainage pipe in my basement I remember reading the various flow rates for various lifts on the outside of the sump pump box, the higher lift reduces the flow but you should still be good to go IMO ! ;)

Think about filtering the water.

I would wonder about water quality from a shallow source(sump seepage).

I agree on the water quality issue.

Who knows what has been soaking in that groundwater, but I bet you that dead, decomposing small rodents are part of it. Not to mention dog & cat leavings.

Mornin Coach,
It sounds like the other guys have some concerns about water quality, I dont disregard that concern but also notice your in northern Pa. That tells me that you havent even started your pool pump and filter up yet ! My point is that once that pool is started up chlorinated and adequately filtered that point is moot IMHO ! ;) :)

I agrree with Scotty, I have an inground pool that right now is full of snow, ice and water. With our snow load this year it will be running over once things melt down. It will actually have to be pumped down before I can start cleaning up the water.

Once it is full to the right level you will be able to filter out and clean up the water for swiming.

Maybe you should consider adding a sump pump check valve between the end of your present pipe and the pipe going to the pool.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I too wondered about the water quality but assumed that after running it through the filter and chlorination process it would be suitable. As for the quantity, the pool is about 3/4 full now. I simply drained the level down below the skimmer level as my owner's manual suggested. So, I could probably back it back up rather quickly with the rate it gets pumped out now. Only problem is when I intend to open it up in mid May, the sump may not be running with as much frequency. Oh what am I thinking...we have 2 seasons here...August & winter!

And yes, it will be quite some time before I'll be dipping a toe in that water, living here in NW Pa...we had flurries this morning!

You are right. Disinfection and filtration is used to treat lake, creek, river, and stream water into potable drinking water for many many people. There's nothing in that sump water that can't be made safe with typical pool techniques.

Just a thought, but catch the rest in a cistern for watering the garden? Or other grey water uses?
