I have worked on a super h tractor to get it to run. I am now having trouble getting the tractor to start. The starter sounds good when I hook up jumper cables to the battery but the engine never turns over. It has been changed over to a 12 volt system and has a new alternator. I have also tested the starter and it was in good shape. I have drained the fuel twice and added new and have went through the wiring system and checked it over and cant seem to find any problems. Any idea on what could be the reason the engine wont start.

It won't turn over or it won't fire?

It sounds like it won't turn over. However you checked the starter, you must have not checked the starter drive. It may be failed. If the starter engages and you just hear a whirring noise the starter drive has failed. pull the starter and replace it. ( some people call the starter drive a "Bendix" because Bendix made a lot of the early ones.)

Will it start if you pull it and, kinda tough without a helper ! Used to have to drag a few around every morning back in the day. If that works you know fuel and spark are good and go from there.

Just thought. I have converted my W4 to 12 volts and was warned this could cause more wear on the drive because it engages so hard. You should also check to see it your ground wire for shut off isn't grounding out. Just pull the wire off at the motor and try it. I had this happen and it turned out the switch was bad. Just a thought.

If it won't move force it. If it breaks it needed fixing anyways.

The engine will not engage and start.

If the starter spins but never engages the flywheel (as in to turn the engine itself over), then something is messed up with the starter/Bendix. Either needs rebuilt or replaced as a whole.

But I am still confused, Because on one hand you are talking about a starter not engaging (meaning its not even cranking over the engine)....

Then on the other hand you are talking about draining fuel (twice), and going through wiring, etc.

So I wonder why someone would take the time to do that if the starter has failed to even crank over the engine?

The engine will not engage and start.
Solenoid is smoked or drive overheated and is frozen. Make sure your battery is good. Mine did the same thing because a cell was bad in the battery. 200 amp starter charger proved my point.

There is one more thing to check regarding old IH's....if the starter is spinning, but the tractor engine is not turning over, yes, it could be what some of the other have stated...however, have you checked the "ring gear" on the flywheel...I've seen Farmall's with really worn ring gears that the starter bendix will not reach to hook up .....pull the starter and look in...if the ring gear looks worn where the bendix hooks up, that could very easily be your issue...the fix is not terrible...just split the tractor, take it off and turn it over to the "good side"....Yeah, I know splitting ain't the easiest thing, but if that's the case, its your only fix...BobG in VA

Did you check to make sure everything has been switched from pos ground. You said you changed over to 12v did you retain pos ground on everything. If not the starter will spin backwards and not engage the bendix, Just a thought and good luck

This is not necessarily a solution, but you could crank it to start. Just remember to ****** the timing about 4 degrees, first.

The starter does not care which way the electrons flow. I have rewired many and switched to - ground. Not one spun backwards. If you switched to a solid state alt, it would need to be -ground to not fry the circuits. If you stay with the genny just repolarize.
