Pretty easy to find used U55s for less than $40K. Not sure what the cutter attachment would cost.

I have found a nice U45 for 28
Cutter heads are all over the place. 5grand to 15 grand or more.

I could live with a 45. 12' digging depth would require more movement and work but at least you could keep the dirt pile away.

I'll have to Google the cutter concept. Watch a view videos for prospect of productivity. :)

Even the cheaper ones that look like a little bush hog look very effective

Missouri Department of Transportation has some very big ones on large booms. I've never happened to see them working but I've saw the aftermath. Man, those things will chop up some very large tree limbs. Debris laying everywhere when they are done. Long enough booms to sit on the hiway and clear protruding brush to the fencelines.

Yep, Im looking for a smaller version. I could spend a month cutting back limbs that damage my hay equipment. It would take away all the hand work around the ponds & canals we do. Also dig footings, concrete slab prep.
It would also open a new way to cut brush to add to the brush cutting we do along the ground with the bush hogs.

Id have to weigh the pros/cons of each when it comes to rocks. There will be rocks getting hit here and there.
Cost will be a factor. The rotary drum mowers with the carbide teeth and incredibly expensive. You can spend more on the cutter than the machine to run it!

If you're dealing with rocks, I suggest using just the regular vertical spindle mower but fitted with high strength grade 80 chains instead of blades.

It's what we use on tractors, since we always find rocks. It will handle some thicker stuff too and it will just skip over the rocks without getting damaged.

It's available for excavators too.

This picture is from a 3pt mower, but it's just to get the idea of how it looks with chains. With enough HP, it can run four chains instead of two.

Yeah maybe, need to be able to cut everything from normal weeds & stickers to tree branches. The one I saw a demo of was just a typical small bush hog and it did a heck of a job. Simple and cheap, but a large rock could put a hurting on it.
