I'm getting ready to change the gear oil in the front axle of my Kubota L3010HST, so I looked up the specs in the manual. To my surprise, the manual stated I could use either 80W-90 or Super UDT.

What are the advantages of using Super UDT? Has anybody done that? TIA, Pete

I think that would be a waste of money. 80w-90 or regular UDT would do fine. personally, I'd opt for UDT.

I asked my dealer what he recommended and he said 80w90 gear oil.

I asked my dealer on the BX 23 and was told "We only use Super UDT in the front axle it flows better". So that's what I used.
Sounds as good to me. Richard

The UDT give the protection that the gears need without the heavy weight oil. The tractor gears move so slowly that the heavy weigh oil isn't necessary for gear protection as it would be in a automobile or truck. The advantage of the UDT in the front end is in your climate, it will flow into the bearings better under cold conditions. I would use Super UDT for the small additional cost. Better low temperature flow characteristics.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Many tractor manufacturers spec UTF type oils in lots of places. Many NH tractors only use 2 oils.. crankcase, and then their version of UTF in everything else.. tranny.. hydro, pow steering, final drives.. front axle.. rear end.. etc.

I use Super UDT. That way I only have to remember two oils for my tractor. Engine and trans oil. I doubt there is a advantage to using Super UDT in the front axle. All the gears and bearing are always flooded in oil.

3 of 3 dealers around here recommend UDT. Ever try changing gear oil when its cold? If you ever have to do it, you will find the hydraulic fluid flows very easy and thus, carries foreign debris out easier. As Junkman mentioned, the gears turn so slowly, all your needing is lubrication. Automatic transmissions use a much lighter oil then the old manuals and even many of todays manuals are using lighter oils. I vote for UDT.

I'm the odd one out again. I use the 80w-90. No one around here sells the Super UDT because it only freezes a few days a year and the extra flowing ability in cold weather is not needed. Even the 80w-90 drains quickly in December /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. If I lived where you do I'd use the Super UDT.
