Super UDT vs Sae 80-90wt

nothing strange about this at all. The oil is in there for lubrication of the bearings only. There is so little pressure on the gears themselves, any lubricant will suffice. If this differential were turning the speed of a automobile differential, then the pressures on the gears would be tremendous by comparison, so it would require a different type of lubricant. Today, cars use highly specialized lubricants for each component and many of them cost more per unit than Super UDT.

Many manual transmissions have also gotten away from the heavy old gear oil. Automatic transmissions which are still filled with gears use a similar oil to that of UDT. It does not suprise me that a light weight oil can be used for bevel gears in a very slow speed setup.

When I changed the front axle fluids in my B2400, I used Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. Mine has the Bi-speed turn option and the Mobil 1 states on the bottle that it is compatible with limited slip differentials. This is a concern as the Bi-speed uses a clutch pack for the overdrive.

My dealer said to use 80-90 gear oil in the front 4wd differential. That is what they put in when they service tractors. They think it works better then UDT here in the Texas heat.
