All -

After posting a message about my toolbox, I got to thinking (this is not a good thing sometimes /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif).

I can imagine that most of you with larger properties need to carry more stuff, but in general - What is necessary to take with you in your tractor toolbox?

Currently -- in the toolbox that's too small - gloves, fence pliers, extra pins, extra shear bolts, spare glasses
What I want in a box big enuff - above + chain, more tools, ax, limb saw , ???

Ditto to what the other Mike said. Plus if I use a tool on the tractor when it's parked in the garage, I will put it in the toolbox and buy another one to replace it, assuming it's a relatively inexpensive tool.

3 things are a must for me. 10" Adjustable wrench, medium hammer, and a shop rag. Plus the usual assortment of pins and clips.

Terry -

It's really going to be determined with the particular type of chores you do on a regular basis. I suppose, however, there are certain items that would be good for just about anybody to have with them. For example, a first aid kit was the first thing I put in there. Only needed it once so far, but it was nice to get a band-aid on my boo-boo and keep right on working. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I started out carrying gloves, but I seem to wear them virtually all the time, so they don't really need to be in the box.

Handy tools -- I carry several wrenches, which allows me to tighten or adjust just about anything on the tractor. Also a good-sized ball and peen hammer in case I feel like beating on something. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
Pliers, vice grips and wire cutters come in handy for odd tasks, especially those involving wire fencing.

Spare parts - hitch pins, clips, sheer bolts, etc. Anything that will keep me out in the field longer.

Chains - One of my ammo boxes has nothing but chains in it. The toolbox has an assortment of hooks, quick-links, shackles, etc.

Baling wire and duct tape - Need I say more? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Walkie talkie on my hip and a whistle around my neck and I'm ready for anything.

Still need a good, safe way to carry my camera. Who knows? Someday I might want to snap a picture for my TBN buddies. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Terry, here's what I've got but not in a tractor mounted box:

Box on my trailer tongue contains various chains, binders, long pipe extension for binders, straps, carpet scraps (don't want to scratch the tractor, or cut the straps) and a few other odds and ends.

I have another box we call the "property box" that I usually remember to bring with me. It has a few adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers, hammer, spare shear pins and a few other tractor related things. Also has my 300 foot tape, various marking flags, tape and spray cans of marking paint. Lots of gloves and poison ivy remedies too. Oh yeah, rags and paper towels. Can't seem to have enough of those.

I carry a spare lynch pin right on my tractor. For anything else, I'll hike the couple of hundred feet back to my truck /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Terry,
I found out over the years the smaller the tool box the less junk in the bottom, but than again when I need tool etc.. I wish I had a bigger tool box./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
I keep hammer, pilers, small vice grips,6in1srcewdriver,roll of black electric tape, fuses, lighter for couple of cigars in the tractor compartment under the hood.
Tool box,2 quarter inch chains,spare pins,spare bolts nuts,strapes,snow brush.
I won't tellya what I carry in my pockets during the winter months./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Sometimes it seems like I spend more time workin' off of my truck tailgate than the workbench.
Come to think of it the tailgate is my workbench for remote locations. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

On a related note the current issue of Successful Farming Magazine has some interesting articles.
One titled "Tools that Travel". Another covers field service trucks, a converted ambulance is profiled. /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif
Also one on workshops, lighting, hoists, etc. You can view edited versions of the stories online here.

Yea Thomas, can't beat havin' a 6 in 1 screwdriver. Vise grips too./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I also like to have a small brass head hammer on the tractor. Handy to secure and loosen the locknuts for the toplink and adjustable side link when changing implements.
