Why exactly are you arguing about people trespassing on someone's property? If he was fenced and gated they would have to find another way to get to where they want to be so why not just do that? All the OP is saying is just give him the courtesy of a phone call and warning. Someone doing what they did in SC will get you shot in a heartbeat. You don't catch surveyors doing that here.

Seems like this issue is just yet another good reason to have a gate on the driveway. Do the remote controlled, solar powered gate openers work reliably for years, or are they a pain?

They can be. Just like anything else, they need attention from time to time. It's pretty amazing how living 1/2 mile off the highway limits this stuff. I did have Jehovah and his witnesses come to the house the other day. They weren't there long.

Our driveway it is exactly one mile long. We do have a gate and openers we purchased earlier this year Just waiting on the farmer to get the crops taken out so we can get utilities marked to start install.

I was out at my property working one time and had this happen to me, a couple of dudes walking out of the woods. Asked them what they were doing and they were surveyors. They were surveying my buddies property so I wasn't that upset, but I wasn't exactly nice either. They just had to walk through a bunch of thick brush to get to the point that I saw them so I kind of felt sorry for them. There was a creek involved and the only way to get to that corner was on my side of the creek.

Are you responsible for the surveyors safety on your land?

Not sure, but I would imagine their safety would be covered by their survey company insurance, if not my home insurance.
If anything, me giving them permission first, would likely only increase the chance of it being my problem, since I acknowledged and OK’d their presence

Some machinery may accidentally block the vehicle in next time. It would be a shame if I couldn't find the keys to them when they were ready to leave.
