Darren on most suppension bridges after the top cable is run they ussaully start building the deck from the center of the span out both directions. this mininizes the need to level since you are loading equaly from center outward.

Darren,
If you have children that attend schoolin WVa,and they depend on that bridge to get them in and out to attend school(in the case of high water or lack of road),I believe the Board of Education is responsible to maintain or supply you with a pedestrian bridge. My wife and I were looking at a place a few years ago that had a road that went through the creek and with high water you cant drive through,a pedestrian bridge is the only way in or out for kids to get to the school bus.I remember my wife reading about that.

Scott there's no kids on this side of the creek. Nice try though. The bridge was originally built in the 50's by a gas company to provide access for pipeline walkers. At some point they turned it over to the property owner several owners ago.

It's my problem now.

Darren:
I went on the Corps of Engineers website and searched for Suspension Bridge - found this Army Training Manual on Bridge Inspection, Maintenance and Repair. Don't know if it has what you want, but might be worthwhile.

Thanks for looking that up. All I have to do now is figure out how to get Adobe Reader working on my computer.

We were down at Turkey Run last Wed, Thur. and Fri. I was all excited to get the kids on the bridge and shake it. Let me tell you, that bridge just won't shake any more. It was very sturdy.

Here's a pic of one of the trails. Sorry I didn't get one of the bridge.

That is gorgeous! I didn't know Indiana had terrain like that.

Gotta love Turkey Run. Doesn't even seem like you're in Indiana does it? I can't tell you how many times I've climbed those ladders. I was in a hiking club in high school and Turkey Run/Shades were our favorite destinations. Thanks for the pictures Dave /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yeah, from about mid state down, the farther you go south the closer you get to that kind of sandstone and ravines. The only thing separating it from northern Appalachia is the Ohio River. Southern Indiana is really beautiful. Of course, I’m partial to the fields and woods of Northern Indiana myself /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif.

If you have a map, Turkey Run is located almost straight west of Indianapolis near the Illinios border. There is another state park about 7 miles north of it called The Shades. It is less developed and I like it even better.

There are about 30 covered bridges in that county alone. But the suspension bridge in Turkey Run is the only one that I know of in Indiana.

How are the hangers attached to the rope? Are they attached or just wraped around and still able to slide?

Here's my thought, and maybe I am missing something, but:

Can you?
1. make all the hangers you need?
2. Like sewing, thread the ropes through all the hangers (all bunched together)?
3. Tension the ropes across death valley(humor)?
4. Starting at one end, push out the bundle of hangers, install the planking as you go, 1 board at a time, spacing out the hangers as you go?
