Switching wheels from one side to the other?

Then go wide enough to feel save but still use the tractor in most places.

Tires have tread and mounted one way have optimum traction going forward. Mounted the other way they have better traction going backwards. MY JD 870 manual shows rear42-55 inch wheel tread center to center and 45.9-57.9 up front. 7 ways you can mount things to get the width you want. Center section in or out and then use the offset of the rim itself. The only caveat is they don't want your tires rubbing the fenders. It does mention 140 footpounds for the bolts. Lots of Yanmar in my little tractor.

I was going make similar comment ...OP said tread direction would remain the same ...I'm rusty on my spatial relations, but I'm guessing they will reverse when you swap the wheels side to side ...not necessarily a problem, I'd guess

If he takes puts the wheels on "backwards" as he suggests, but puts the Left wheel on the Right hand side and visa versa, he's right... his tread direction won't change.

I believe the way you have them mounted now in your picture is the narrowest they can be mounted.

You could simply move the tire/outer-rim from the inside of the inner-rim to the outside of it & gain what looks to be about 3"-4" in overall tractor width.

Or you could simply flip the inner-rim 180 degrees (or swap them from one side to the other) & gain what looks to be about 3"-4" in overall tractor width.

Or you could do both of the above & gain what looks to be about 6"-8" in overall tractor width.

I don't believe any of the above would result in the tread direction change.

I "think" I have all this right ... Somebody confirm?

Thank you all very much. What a great group and a great site this is:thumbsup:
Got it done this morning
I did not split the wheel. opting to just undo the six bolts on each wheel at the hub and swapping left wheel for right and right for left. This kept the tread direction intact and gained me about 12 inches overall tractor width. Awesome.

Thanks.
Yup. I really cant see any reason why I shouldnt be able to. Just want to bounce it off a few people to see before I jack it up.
Will it get more grab to the ground as well then?

Should work just fine, but doubt it gets more "grab" to the ground. Not sure why you might think that.

But no harm no foul doing the switch. As long as the lugs are the right direction.

The tires on my cub cadet are mounted in the same manner IF you were to switch the wheels one side to the other keeping the tread direction the same as you stated. If you do this on your front tires chances are your going to have to fight the steering wheel more however.
