symptoms of water in hydraulic fluid

Hey guys,

Have a John Deere 410, late 70's model. Just had engine and radiator replaced. The clutch is still slipping. It only has one gear that it will actually pull up a hill in, and the hydraulics are still a little slow. I tried digging a hole with it for about 5 minutes and blew a hole in the short hose on the bottom of the hydraulic oil cooler, and the fluid that came spraying out was milky.

The question is, will water in the hydraulic oil make the clutch slip and make the hydraulics slow and weak?

Second question is, is there any way for the coolant/water to get from the radiator into the hydro oil?

FYI, the guys that replaced the engine and radiator also drained the hydro fluid, cleaned the screens and replaced the filters, etc.

As far as I know milky oil will only slow hyd's by plugging filter or sump screen. Have these things been serviced lately. Water in hyd oil can cause rear brake pads to prematurely fail. 2 things cause milky(water)oil first being cracked shifter boot and 2nd being plugged trans breather. Damper clutch at flywheel slippage can cause weak hyd's by letting pump slow down. I suggest you check trans pump operating pressure. It should be around 165 psi.

How do I go about checking transmission pressure? I am new to heavy machinery.

Install a gauge in one of the trans pump test ports. I'd suggest you invest in a 410 JD service manual then read it thoroughly before attempting a hyd repair. Diagnosing hyd problems on a closed-center hyd system can cause you to prematurely GO BALD!!!!!!!!!!
