ok.. one more question on the crank sensor.
When I got the truck I asked the dealer about it due to what I have read here before about them.. he said he had changed it when the truck came in.
now.. that said.
do these things fail that often? Is it worth it for me to carry a spare?
is it something I can change onthe side of the road with a ratchet set or wrenches?
if yes to above questions.. then anyone got a pic / location on my 7.3 so I can get an idea of what would be needed to change it.
or is this an item that would take more work/tools/time to fix than what i would be carrying with me.
heck.. I'm carrying spare 'other' things.. if this sensor is so crummy and not expensive.. sounds like something else to have.
is this a dealer only item.. or something I can get at napa?
thanks

The new version of the CPS is grey and is way superior to the old black one in terms of dependability. Hopefully that's what your mechanic put in. They are 38$ at the ford dealer but you can buy the CPS at NAPA as well plus I would imagine other parts places. Mine would cause the engine to momentarily shut off, especially when the intermittent wipers would fire. I suspect something to do with EM interference since the sensor is a magnetic pickup for the cam postion but who knows.
The old black ones failed that often, so often that you carry a spare in the truck. I carry a new grey one in the glove box out of habit and since I didn't yet know to trust the new grey one. They aren't big or expensive so why not? Given the new grey one's track record I wouldn't feel bad about giving it to a guy on the side of the road broke down with a bad black CPS and might not replace it.
You can change it on the side of the road easily. The sensor is located right on the front of the engine. if you are looking at the harmonic balancer(main crank pulley) from the front the sensor is located at the 10 o'clock position. You will access it from below on the dside of the front of the truck. A 10 millimeter bolt holds it in so all you need is a basic socket set. The sensor has an o-ring seal so you just pull the old one out and put the new sensor in.
I really like the new grey sensor and I think Ford finally fixed it.
