Oil & Fuel Synthetic motor oil

I am out too; can't understand why people seem to start frothing at the mouth over this; good grief "cheapie oil". Because someone doesn't agree with me I don't assume they are stupid or neophytes, but a lot apparently do.

You know what's interesting? I'm pretty well a synthetic kind of guy myself. I take good care of my equipment, but when I work it, I work it hard. If synthetic oil will give me just a tiny bit of an advantage, it's worth it to me.

However, my late father in law, who I really did get along with very well, was a millwright and also specialized in heavy engine work; i.e. he rebuilt engines everyday on the side for extra cash. He used nothing but the absolute cheapest oil he could possibly find that met the requirements specified by the engine manufacturer. He firmly stated that using anything more is nothing but a waste of money. Again, I got along with him really well, I just didn't always agree with him. Still, being that he likely rebuilt over 300 - 400 engines, easily, in his life and saw all the internal parts in each, it's rather hard to argue with his outlook. Now he is the one who went into a frothing at the mouth tizzy about me using Fram filters and went on for hours showing me how they were responsible for damage and were nothing but junk. He believed in following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule and using either the manufacturer's brand oil filter or another quality oil filter. Otherwise, I can't stress how much he ranted about oil is just oil as long as you change it like you are supposed to and use the oil you're supposed to use according the whoever made the engine.

Just a little food for thought from a guy who is a self admitted synthetic kind of guy but has to admit there is little proof that the cheapest "correct" oil won't work just fine for you.

Sounds like a politician in waiting.

LOL. Hardly. But any oil thread must officially include the following:

1 guy who uses possum squeezings and has never had a problem.

1 guy who swears by Amsoil/Royal Purple

1 guy who abuses anybody who chooses differently.

I swear it's in the posting rules. Somewhere. Honest. Trust me :D

I don't want to add any fire to the dino/syn debate, but just wanted to share some food for thought. In addition to my tractor, I run a 2003 Dodge Ram w/ the Cummins diesel. I run the same oil in each machine. The tractor has about 250 hours on it, oil is changed every 75 hours. The truck has 82000 miles and 2000 hours. Oil in the truck is changed every 7500 miles, which equates to approx 183 hours. Use a quality oil and filter, perform routine oil changes, and you will most likely never have an oil related failure on your tractor. Something else is going to break first.
