Does anyone recommend using synthetic oil in a 1952 8N?

Search the archives here.. a few months ago, I posted the reply from an oil company about possibly using syn oil for the engine. I got a reply.. that was probably a CYA type answer.. but in short.. they mentioned possible seal incompatibilities. Others have posted that it most likely would do no harm.. however.. I would have liked to have seen that answer from the oil company...

Also.. keep in mind that your N uses only a partial filtration system.. somewhere between 15-25% of the oil is filtered at each pass. With that setup.. you pretty much loose the extended drain interval due to contaminants in the oil. I'm sure the cold weather starting would be a 'plus' though.

I had an 8N. Loved that tractor. Scared the heck out of myself with that single stage clutch and learning to stop while bush hogging.
Soundguy, from what you said it sounds to me like synthetic would be benifical because of the partial filtration system of the 8N.

I think it would be quite the opposite. Obviously the oil filtration on that engine is sub-standard. The big selling point of a synthetic oil is extended change time. Looking at both of those concepts, the big way you are getting dirt out of the engine on an N is to change the oil.. the filter doesn't play a huge roll in removing dirt.

Since the oil change itself is the main cleaning function for the engine.. then keeping that same dirty oil in the tractor 2-3 times longer due to the extended drain intervals will be keeping that dirt in the engine longer.. rather than simply getting rid of it at the 'normal' change interval, and then getting fresh clean oil.

Here is the quote I found in the archives. It is from Mobil, and was in answer to a question posted about using their oil in an older tractor engine:

""Mobil does not recommend using synthetic motor oils in pre-1980 applications due to possible gasket and seal incompatability issues""

Good points Soundguy.
I was thinking for the same change interval the synthetic would be superior to dino, but that would be costly. With that recomendation from Mobil I wouldn't try it either.

SOUDGUY gives some really good reasons why to stay with reg. oil. my idea of it is why change? after 52 years of running on dino oil, i think it would not help at all, just keep changing the oil at reg. intervals.

On that point I agree. If there were no seal incompatibilities.. and you kept the same changer interval with the syn oil.. as with the dino oil.. then yes.. I would think there would be minor benefits.. even if only when dealing with startup lube, and cold weather lubeing. cost would be the 'downside' on that... I still wonder about the 'seal' issue though.

I guess if you had a rebuilt engine you would be good to go.
