Synthetic oil in motor n/g

Please do not take this as a put down or argument--I just want to know. OK--Mobil is a huge company, Castroil is likewise a long known name identifible and so are it's sources, same with other brands--now---since Amway cleaning products owns Amsoil (is this correct?--maybe it is not?) and there is very little commonality with oil and cleaning products and their cleaning products are just a bit strange (my opinion) where then do they get the oil--who makes the stuff for them--where does it come from. Do they spec it out to a second or third party--is it always souced from the same place or wherever they get the best price. If so then is it always the same formulation and quality? Please do not get angry--this is just a question I have had for a long time and since you Amsoil guys are here perhaps that could be answered becuse I would like to know. J

Huh? Amway? Check out their website www.amsoil.com I get the impression that
all they do is synthetic oil.

TresCrows, to the best of my knowledge (which is admittedly quite limited), there is no connection between Amway and Amsoil. I'm running Amsoil in my hydraulics now to see whether I can tell a difference; haven't tried motor oil, but if I'd thought they were connected to Amway, I'd have never tried it. I'll have to admit though that Amsoil's marketing strategy does seem similar to Amway and that, alone, makes me leery of their products.

For a little history of the "fighting" between Penzoil, Amsoil, and Amway over the similarity in the names, check out Amsoil's Presidents Comments

Would appear if they sue each other, it is unlikely they are the same company. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

This topic has been discussed endlessly. It bores me. I'm of the Gertrude Stein opinion: a oil is a oil is a oil is a oil.

Sorry Bird, I said I did not know so I do know now--thanks for setting me straight--they are not the same company (Amway and Amsoil) but still who are they? Sorry, to bore folks but when I see a thread concerning information that bores me I do not click on it, for those who are bored, don't click. I am not bored yet! I might get bored with the oil is an oil and a tractor is a tractor and everything is the same because nothing is different reasoning--. If we want to talk oil what does it hurt? How does it hurt anyone? Just curious about that also. J

Here, here! I'm not bored with it either! I'm always interested in anything that could make the difference in performance and longevity in a piece of equipment that I paid a lot of money for and that should last me a good percentage of my expected lifetime. Myself, I went with the dealers recommendation and put Amsoil in the engine at the 50hour mark, and Super UDT in the tranny.

Myself, I HAVE noticed less black smoke at startup, but no difference in sound or noticeable power differences. I'm considering putting Amsoil in the tranny at the next change, so I'm VERY interested in whether or not anybody has any experience with other than Super UDT. I'm in a cold climate, so that is a consideration....

And for those bored with this thread, don't read it....

Just an FYI with synthetics in cars.

BMW, since 2000, ships all new cars with synthetic motor oil. They recommended oil and filter changes at 15K miles.

From what a friend who works in lubricants at Mobil told me, the oil just about lasts forever, it's the filter that needs changed.

I'm not sure of this, but I would imagine that any condensation that got into the oil would boil off once the engine got to operating temperature.

Well, since some have bored in on my choice of words, perhaps my choice was misleading. I was making a comment on my own state of mind, not on the worth or validity of anyone else's ideas. Nor did I mean that the topic is boring or that anyone's individual posts are boring. Obviously, I am reading the thread, as I have all others on this subject.

More wordily, what I was saying is this: Having read all the opinions and views on the oil issue, I have not been convinced that there is any documented or persuasive evidence to depart from the manufacturers recommendations. Nor am I persuaded that any of these oil options will have any noticeable effect on the performance, life or longevity of a diesel tractor. I have reached the same conclusion about auto oil. For years I put synthetic in my Mustang, for no discernable differerence except a diminution of my pocketbook. (Maybe oil formulations make a difference for something like an Indy racing car.)

Where is there any real evidence that any of this makes a perfomance difference for a tractor? Many of those touting supposed differences have a financial interest in selling the touted product. Even under the completely hypothetical scenario that some particular lubricant will extend the life of a diesel engine. what does that mean--that my tractor will last 36 years instead of 35 years? That's a difference which, even if true, is not worth the cost to me. Moreover, it is unlikely that I would own my tractor that long in any event; I'll either die or trade long before that.

So, my quick choice of words was meant to say that, having thought about this issue a lot, I have concluded that I personally am not interested in (bored with) pursuing the chase for the perfect oil because I dont believe there is such a thing. In this case, I believe a rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.

But, hey, I love discussing and arguing over tractor trivia. Go for it.
