T4.75 PTO issue

I recently purchased a T4.75 with a 504/540E PTO option and 12/12 power reverser transmission. It appears that to shift from 540 to 540E and visa versa..you need the engine off. grinds gears otherwise. I do have the PTO engagement lever in the off position and checked the PTO rotation.. all is normal. I have tried all combinations of actions.. clutch in, power reverser in neutral, transmission in neutral,, et al .. no luck. The only way you can shift the PTO is with the engine not running. I asked the dealer for some feedback..but the New Holland dealer hasn't gotten back to me in a couple of days... any suggestions??? or is this normal for a 540/540E power reverser tractor???

How does the operator's manual instruct you to shift the PTO?

The operators manual doesn't say much of anything except ...push the PTO speed selector lever forward for 540E and pull the lever back for 540.. nothing more

Then I guess if my dealer hadn't gotten back to me about that in " a couple days" I'd be after him. Until then, shut off the tractor before shifting the PTO. If the shifting mechanism is between the engine and PTO clutch, that's the way you will have to do it anyway. If the mechanism is between the clutch & output shaft, you may get better info that lets you shift while the tractor is running.
