T48 Tank Starting Issue

I have a T-48 Tank that's about 8 years old with a 20hp Honda motor. When starting it, I usaully have to turn the key 5-6 times before it will start to crank and start. It just makes a click (relay) sound when it doesn't crank. But when it cranks it starts right up.

To test the starter without much expense, try a pair of jumper cables from the positive battery to the positive starter lug and the negative to the negative to the starter motor case. If it cranks we can be fairly confident the starter is OK.

Then remove the negative cable and try it. If it still cranks ok we can assume the negative (ground) circuit is in good condition. From there it's a matter of checking backward through the system from the starter to see where current is lost.

Excellent advice. Try to power up the starter, right at the starter connections. I'm not sure of common starter issues with these engines.

I do know that my Z-Force will exhibit this behavior on occasion if the parking brake safety switch isn't completely met when I attempt to start the engine. All I do is rock forward and back in my seat and you'll hear a *sprong* type noise from the trans area, then it will start right up. It hasn't happened enough for me look into it.
