5055e
I recently bought a 5055E 4wd. 2010 model with the old style gauges. Last time I got it out the tach didn't work. Figured it was a loose wire so I took it apart and tightened or felt of all the plugs and wires. Also checked the battery ground. Help please. What's wrong with my tractor.

Re: Tech not working

One more thing that may be important... the temperature gauge has not worked 2 3 times. It would start working shortly into the time I was using the tractor. I'd say it has worked 90% of the 30ish hours I've put on the tractor. It has 1100 hours one it

Bad alternator?

Re: Tech not working

Make sure to check grounds for gauges the temp and tach may well share a common ground that can effect both. If in doubt jumper a ground to tach and see if it works.

Re: Tech not working

I have a 2009 5055E and my tach will show zero for some time after starting and eventually start working. I've not had a problem with the other gauges. I'll have to check my grounds to see if that fixes it.

Re: Tech not working

Seeing your problems are all in the Dash area, I too would point to the grounding system.

Is the Dash a single unit or all individual gauges ?

IF, when you're looking for the ground, you find a lot of dirt, corrosion, and just plain bad connections, you might want to consider running new ground wiring. I know you are probably saying NO WAY, but in the long run do a GWRP, "ground wire replacement procedure" (LoL), you will reduce the number of electrical problem you could encounter in the future.

Since you have no info about where you live, or where the Tractor came from, you may, based on weather conditions, run into other electrical problems, so a little proactive electrical work MAY help in the long run, i.e. charging system grounding, and new grounds for the engine, the alternator, and the starter.

Then there is the sending units, are they in good condition, are they rusted, or maybe even have they been replaced and there is too much sealing paste. What condition is the wiring to the sending units ?

OK I'm done, I do things thinking ahead not just in the moment, so take my suggestions with a little more than a grain of salt !

2008 JD 5303 does same thing. Run tractor for little and will all of the sudden start working. No other gauge issues.

I ran a ground wire from the battery last night to what I think is the ground for the tach with no luck. I can't help but think it's something simple but I'm stumped. I'm not ruling out a grounding problem either.

Does it use the generator as signal source?

You may need to look over all of the connections in the Dash area, not only the dash connection what about the frame ground in that area, you did say a few of the gauges were having problems... so you need a common point for all gauges... i.e. GROUNDS or power !

Disconnect, clean, and reinstall all of the gauge connectors, put some conductive electrical paste on the connections and a little in-between the Nut, Lug, and Mounting Point !

Electrical problems are a hard thing to follow and fine, some maybe not even related to the source of the problems. I had a Mustang with Fog Lights, I got a short where my tail lights and license plate lights were on all the time. I went though the drill on the rear of the vehicle thinking taillights, and couldn't find the problem. I broke down and took it to a local electrical shop and WHAM-BAM he found a shorted wire in my Fog Light Switch.
How did the Fog light Switch effect the Taillights, not sure but the problem was done with. So I am thinking are there any other electrical problems, that pop up once in a while, small ones, you may not think they are related but you will only know when they are fixed !

After reading a related post, your tach runs off the alternator, is the alternator working ok, putting out as needed ?
Also, do the gauges that sometimes don't work, not work together or at different times ?

I would pull all those screw terminals on the back of the cluster one at a time and clean them and tighten. Those 3 terminals in a triangle pattern are the back of the gauge motor. Could be an issue. I would do that to all terminals first. Then you need a multimeter to start checking the inputs to each gauge. Not sure what the schematic shows, but each gauge should have a power + and - and a signal wire.

Well as mysteriously as it stopped working... it started back working again yesterday. I still plan on taking each screw out and cleaning it then applying some dielectric grease as it goes back together.

Since it works , then not, then it does again... it is either one of two things... :

1) Electrical Connections that the thread has touched on.

2) the Tach is broken inside with intermittent connections.

If this happens again you should consider either replacing the Meters that don't work or take apart the meters that don't work and see if you can find a bad connection or something else that maybe wrong.

Intermittent Electrical problems can be a bear to locate.

Good Luck !

Our 6200 had an intermittent tach. It has the magnetic sensor up front somewhere, which was replaced and has been working well for years. I would not have thought, that would be intermittent as it's just a coil of wire.
