Tach on my diesel tractor stopped working how can i trobleshoot problem?

help troubleshoot a problem with my diesel tractor's tachometer. it stopped working. Kubota L3200.

I would think,
pull the top section of your dash out,
unscrew the tach cable and start the tractor.
If the cable spins, it's your tach, if it doesn't,
remove the other end of the cable and spin it by hand, watching the opposite end
to see if it also spins, if it doesn't, you have confirmed that's it's the cable.

It might be simple. Verify the cable is attached properly. The tach on my Yanmar quit working when I had the tractor worked on. The mechanic hadn't tightened the cable connection.

If it's your tach and not the cable, it may still be possible to fix it yourself.

The tach on my '88 JD750 quit. I priced a replacement from Mother Deere. Somewhere North of $300...not happening. Searched high and low for a generic replacement, also not happening. Ran without it for probably a couple of years.

Got bored this winter and decided I couldn't break it any worse that it already was, so I very carefully filed around the sharp corner where the bezel ring crimps over the can holding the works, and popped the bezel, lens and works out of the can. The problem was extremely simple: The grease on the gear drive had dried out (after 25 years...whodathunkit?) so I very carefully cleaned the gears and re-lubed them.

I was able to put everything back and used a bit of silicone glue to seal the bezel ring, and popped it back in the dash. Works poifeck!

Here is a picture of your tach cable. inside of the red outline. It goes from the gearcase up front to the tach and screws into a right angle fitting on the back of the tach.
