I found it. looks like my tach is mechanical and the end of the cable shaft that inserts into the gear housing rusted off. Next question, would this drive the hour meter? Seems unlikely, but you never know.
Maybe. Some hour meters are simple clocks that run whenever the switch is on. Others measure "hours at rated RPM" and are driven off the tach signal (electrical or mechanical).

Yes.
On the older DK 35 hours are based on RPM speed. The tachometer cable drives the tachometer and the hour meter.

Thanks again for all the great feedback. I sent an e-mail to Michigan Iron and Equipment requesting a service/repair manual and a replacement tach cable.
