Good choice. Easy to keep running yourself for a long, long time.
Most of them come now with a plastic safety slide. It works just fine; however, if you use it alot and it gets wobbly order the metal replacement - an oe part - for the 590. It will last forever.

Ejector is held on by a screw. This is good, if it ever breaks (not likely) it is easier to replace then a Remington 870 which is riveted. Down side is screw has a tendency to get loose. Don't gorrila it tight since it is aluminum reciever, just make sure it is snug whenever you get it and then every few thousand rounds, no big deal.

Recoil, not every shotgun fits every person. If the stock is too long recoil seems worse. Don't be afraid to cut it down. I could walk you through it, its easy. If the stock recoil pad seems hard there are plenty of real nice inexpensive prefitted aftermarket pads that are nice.

Good luck and good shooting! That gun should last forever with minimal care. Don't ever never try to take the trigger assembly apart, just take it out, hose it out with rem oil aerosol, blow dry with a air comperssor and put it back in. Shouldn't need to totally field strip and clean it unless you get it all wet or every 1,000 rounds or so, whichever comes first.

Terrific information folks. At least around here it's pretty difficult to find anything in the shops right now. I found and am on a waiting list for a Mossberg 500 combo with a 18 inch and a 26 inch barrel. I really like the idea of the safety on the top of the receiver. I think I made a good choice considering they are reliable and it will sit in a corner for the most part.

Ain't that something? Nowadays you have to get on a waiting list to buy a Mossberg 500. Who would have thunk it? I used to give those away as presents to relatives..who knew? They are good shotguns, I still have one, tough and simple. I am sure you will like it.

What is low recoil ammo? Lower energy for indoor use? Lower noise too?

Just a lighter load. Most buck shot loads are set up for maximum charge of powder, this is just a little less. Kind of like the difference between "high brass" and "low brass" field loads. You would shoot "low brass" at clay targets and bird hunting, "high brass" at ducks or pheseants for a little more range and knock down power. The low recoil buckshot and slugs are just "low brass" type loads.
Noise isn't any less.

Just a thought .... but after your shoulder starts aching from the recoil .... ponder a 11-87 Remington semi-auto.

I've had numerous pump actions and still have one sawed off and shoved in the vehicle chest with a pistol grip and light. We still have a 14" and 18" Mossberg in our patrol units.

But .... several years ago I acquired the 11-87 Tactical and I would never buy another pump again.

And coincidentally ... one of the guys above stated he had seen errors when using a pump action where a round went to the ground instead of battery ......... believe him ....... I had it happen to me.

To dusty3030:

Thanks. It just seemed that a foe that required buckshot would also require full velocity. For home defense, apparently shorter range and minimum collateral damage outweigh the need for full energy.

I know that many have mentioned the low recoil buckshot, and it has been around for years, but have any of you tried the Aguila minishells" They are shorter by far than regular 2 3/4 shells, and wont feed in a lot of guns, but will supposedly feed perfectly in an Win 1300.. I have a couple of those and was kinda wondering if anyone have every tried any?

Even with shotguns !

Yes to what RSKY said about mistaken identity on a `break-in' .
My wife woke me from a sound sleep a few years back, and said,"Don,someone's trying to break in!" Well THAT woke me up pretty quickly, and I'm glad it wasn't real dark, because it was a kid about 19 drunk as a skunk or high,I dunno. He'd lay on my yard and then get restless and come up and rattle my door, yelling of all things,my son's first name.
I stood at the door as we called the police to make sure he didn't break the lock, and when the police came they cuffed him and stuffed him. Turned out he THOUGHT he was at a friend's house in Wellston,OH about 8 miles away.
He was verrrry fortunate he was not in total darkness. don-ohio :)^)
