Assume you mean on a moldboard or bottom plow. It keeps the plow running straight. With some bottom plows if you pull them off they will pull you in a curve (into the plowed area, normally to your right). Some of this will depend on how large the plows are and how heavy the tractor is and the ground also.
well my next question is do I really need it? It broke off . Do you think it would be a problem plowing without it . I have a 45hp tractor and it a 2 bottom plow with coulters. Its only going to be a couple of acres.

I don't think it will be a problem. TSC sells all those new plows without coulters or the tail wheel.
My neighbor has an old Ford plow and it has no tail wheel or coulters.
