Seems to me you think of salesmen like most people think of plumbers. Just sayin'. . . .

About the original topic. . . I don't think you automatically consider talking down someone on every price; however, I do believe that as a buyer you should "test the waters" and make a lower offer, especially on used equipment. I got several thousand dollars worth of work done on a used TLB because I asked the dealer if he could reduce his price for a cash deal. He said he could reduce the price, but I'd have to take the tractor "as-is" with no repairs. When I asked if that meant he would fix anything needing fixed at his asking price, he said yes. I told him I wanted the TLB and gave him a list of repairs. After I had the tractor for a week, he picked it up and did another $1000 worth of repairs without charging me a dime.

Of course, there are times when I look at used equipment and don't want it at any price. Sometimes people want to sell you something that they should be paying you to haul off. That's what makes shopping/buying fun and a challenge. You really do have to do your homework to know the good deals from the overpriced nightmares. You also have to consider the old saying that "one man's trash is another man's treasure." I'm sure I have some of those "treasures" layin' around my place.:D

check local for sale and auctions and get an idea of what local value for a specific machine is.. then try to get a dealer near that...

If it's a used tractor I go to tractorhouse and find a few on there to compare price.. This usually gets you into a huge ballpark figure. Then decide if you're still interested.
I found some people are real proud of their old used equipment but most seem to sell at market value.
Another good option is once you find a tractor that your interested in post about here and believe me you'll get lots of opinions about it's worth.. :D
