Tameland fire

If you have a large body of water nearby (like the reservoir behind The Dalles dam), about three Canadair CL-415 water bombers could do a racetrack course and really quench things in a hurry. Every state with forest land should have a management program that uses revenue from responsible timber harvest to help fund aerial firefighting which could be leased to other states when not in use, with the caveat that they return to the home state when needed.

Recently Consumers Energy built a huge 40 acre substation down the road from me. They put a tall pre-cast concrete wall around the transformer. Is the wall supposed to keep a fire from spreading or to house some type of fire suppression system? Thankfully it's not terribly dry around here and there are fire hydrants within 1/2 mile.

Last I heard they were leaning towards the start of the fire being arson, it's just called the substation fire since it started near one down there.

It may be to protect the transformer from gunfire or other attack. It's happened.

Sadly, a factor today.

Historically, the reason for concrete containment was to restrict an oil spill from a big transformer. They have various safeguards in place, but those walls are a last layer of protection - worst case if the transformer ruptures and the oil catches fire, "the plan" was for it to burn off in place.

At the utility I work at, they build what looks like a empty concrete swimming pool at a low point in each station to catch the oil from a transformer or breaker.

Yall ought to search u tube for what happens when one of those blows up. We had one burn a couple years ago. Wow!
