I guess oil in europe dosent carry the API logo seal? Reason i say this is that API stands for American Pertrolium Institute, its the testing Org that tests and standardizes all oils here. Makes sure the viscosities are what they say as well as have the manufacturer required additives and anti wear qualities. Reason i say this is that I think Deisel rated oil Is the C? rating up to maybe CJ now, the pervious before that would have been CI and the next would be CK. Im thinking they go through the alphabet. Gas oil i think is S?. These i know in deisel are for c=compression and if i remember the correct letter the S=Spark (dont think its I for ignition)

Anyway i say all that to say this, we here just look for the correct lettering as listed in your owner manual or for what your putting it in.
o i will check next time and see what it says on the back of the can and see if it has got any letters . over her they use the term universal oil will let you know when i find out . thanks

I think here we use universal oil for the 10w30 or 5w30 not sure we just call it what weight it is. For years everthing was 10w30 then 5w30 to save energy to help flow cold, now most of the new stuff, vehicles that is, is 5w20.

For a tractor in your climate i would want a 40 weight oil. Not knowing how much you know about oil and viscosity, that means the last # is a 40. the first number can be a 5,10,or15. At least those are the common deisels oils here. Just a quick lesson if you dont know or others reading might not. The first number before the W is the weight of it cold (cant remember the temp at which tested?), but just think of it at start up. So a 15w40 is 15 weight at start up but once to operating temp it acts like straight 40 weight would, which is where the second number comes in. So 5w40 is like 5weight when cold or will flow much better to lube bearings and things at first cause it flows better, but again once warm it acts like 40 weight oil allowing it to keep a thicker viscosity and not break down at hot temps.

yes the 10 w40 is a very common oil grade here and they use the term here universal for back end and engine oil. also it usually says mineral or semi synthetic or full synthetic oil .

Are you saying that they use 10w40 in the rear ends (or rear diferentials) or trucks and things!! Its a multigrade oil that we put in a rear end but is either like a 80w90 or 75w90 or like 80w140 or something.

yes some grade of oils you can buy can be used in the backend and the engine i think its called high tran? my dad used to use it years ago in his agri contracting tractors
