I want to add a sink to my shop. I do not have access to sewer from that location. My plan was to tap into the 6" drainage pipe that moves water from the front of the house out the back of the yard to daylight. This sink will 90% be used for washing hands, maybe a brush or 2. LOTS of water moves through this pipe so whatever I put down it will be diluted 100x during the next rainstorm. THe solution to pollution is dilution.

My questions is how would you tap into a 6" PVC drain pipe for a 1.5" pipe? THIS IS NOT A SEWER PIPE, ONLY STORM DRAINAGE. I am not buying a $200 saddle clamp, there has to be a cheaper way. Worst case I hole saw the 1.5" hole and put silicon around the pipe where it enters. Just seeing if there is a more elegant solution.

Cut into the 6” pipe and install a T connector, then add the reducer fittings to get down to 1 1/2” and the ABS to PVC connector to the sink drain.

Lowes sells a 6" PVC tee $23 then get some adapters to 1.5 or 2" - all in maybe $50.

Depending on the distance you could also dig a 3' hole outside the building, fill with gravel and one or two 5 gallon buckets perforated as a mini leach field. Since its not going to be solvents or other waste should last a long time.

That could also be used but he would need to use the ABS to PVC connectors on both sides.
"tap into a 6" PVC drain pipe for a 1.5" pipe"
If it's 6" PVC, couldn't you just cut the 6" where you want the 1.5" sink, primer & glue?

This is what I put in my garage many years ago, actually a "Y" so shop sink water goes the direction towards a small buried tank out to drain pipe in gravel below my leach field.
It's for sink and shop shower/bathroom & laundry. It works fine, but I'm not a plumber.
Actually just a sink I probably would think about a French drain. I've augered here large stone at bottom then gravel just running 1.5" into it.

Yes, if it were me, and I was going to just drain a sink, I wouldn't go cutting into a 6" storm drain. I'd run a separate line out to a French drain of some sort.

All the best, Peter

When the OP mentioned drain pipe, I assumed that he was talking about ABS pipe. So there’s a ABS to PVC pipe connection that complicates the process. It’s doable.

Around here, one can use just an ABS/PVC glue for the connection. AFAIK, IT comes in one drying speed, and it isn't exactly slow setting so large diameters are a "work even faster" sort of job.

I last had to use it to connect some permeable pseudo French drains with PVC end pieces to solid ABS. Four feet down in a trench, trying to move at speed wrestling pipes together before the glue thickened was certainly memorable.

All the best,

Peter

The more I think about it...this is the way to go. K.I.S.S.
