Tapping onto water supply

$3050 is what the water company quoted me to get a meter installed at the farm. And that was only if the line was on my side of the road. More if they had to bore under the road.

I am just starting a new house. When I contacted the local water dept. to get the water meter set, I got an unpleasant surprise, a charge of $3050.00. I was expecting more in the neighborhood of about 1/3 that amount. Just curious, what does hooking on in your area cost? Maybe mine isn't so unreasonable, but it sure sounds high and hurt spending that much.

Ours cost $3000 5 years ago, and shortly thereafter it went up to $4K!! Now our water dept isn't selling any new water meters at all, if you want to build you have to find an old unused one.

Only once though.

They lived.
Another near miss, electricians were removing old 15KV cables in a manhole, and they cut a live one by mistake with a saw. Another big bang followed by a change of underwear...

Dan,

You reminded of a situation a friend of mine back in California had to deal with. Crow Canyon is an area in the East Bay Area hills that sort of devides the bay from the valley. He lives on a few acres and had a well for water. A new development was built in the area and he was given told that he could get a water tap and meter for $30,000 at his house. He declined since it was so much money and is well worked just fine.

A year or so later, he was forced to pay for a water tap and meter because of some law that was passed. I left before it was all finalized, but the price had gone up and he said they were making all the existing home owners in the area pay for the line to the new development. He wasn't happy about it and the homeowners in the area had hired a lawfirm to fight it. I don't know what the final outcome was.

Today, I visited a friend whose 1 acre home fronts Crow Canyon road and he is still on Well Water and has plenty of it too!

I guess the residents where successful in fighting it... at least all of the signs protesting it are down...

My family had no choice when city water came to where the cabin is located... everyone had to sign-up... existing homes were given a one time reduced rate since it was more economical to do everyone at one time.

It wasn't actually on Crow Canyon, but off of it. I'm not positive, but Norris Canyon is what comes to mind, but I don't have any confidence that's the correct name for the road. It's at the lights in the middle of Crow Canyon and shoots off towards Dublin or that area. If you drive it, there is a developement that was going in that was bringing in the water line.

In the last few years several tracts have gone in on the outskirts of these roads...

The guy I know lives near the Nursery where the road widens.

Public Utilities are funny things... often there will be a big push to get them in, which will spur growth by increasing density.

With the mandatory water rationing, there is something to be said for being on a good well... folks on Crow Canyon generally have excellent water.

Now, I would be will to pay a lot to get sewer service in Olympia WA. It would solve the only on going issue I have up there...
